Reading Room Exhibition: Keith Tottem

Make sure to see Keith’s wonderful classic artwork during July.

‘I have been involved with the Art Group here at the Club since I joined in the late-1990s – first tentatively exhibiting, later joining the Art Committee and eventually as Chairman. The ever-increasing enthusiasm for art amongst Members has been inspirational and classes now have over a hundred class places taken every term.

However to make this an exhibition with a difference I thought I should focus on oil painting – once my main medium. This means looking back into the ‘70s when, living in the Oxfordshire countryside with a young family, I had the space and time to try oil painting, inspired by the landscapes and architecture around me.

To get the hang of oil paints, I started with simpler subjects, stylised townscapes or architectural studies – and I include a few of these as well as full-colour landscapes.

I tend to be drawn towards ‘realism’ so I needed to work in a precise and detailed way. Oil paints, being slow to dry and easy to manipulate were ideal and the depth of colours available is unsurpassable.’
