Art Palette

Your favourite painting voted at the annual exhibition was A Winter Scene by Jonathan Collard (right) and your favourite artist was Peter Hollom who painted HMS Dominion (below right). Thanks to everyone who entered an artwork and made such a popular exhibition.

Spring activities for your diary

1. Skating on Thin Ice: Sparkling Snowscapes and Winter Wonderlands
Tuesday 13th January 8pm
An Art Group Lecture by Lynne Gibson
Join us to enjoy paintings of bitter winters, spectacular landscapes and sparkling effects.
Ideal if your art class syllabus includes painting snow or if you are planning to enter a painting of the Club in winter for the 125th anniversary exhibition.
Free for Art Group members. No need to book. Guests from outside the Club pay £10 cash on the door.

2. Cecil Beaton: Malice in Wonderland
Tuesday 27th January 7.30pm
An Art Group Lecture organised by PhotoClub with Hugo Vickers
Cecil Beaton was a total self-creation who became one of the great photographers recognised through his portraits of the Royal Family and stars of stage and screen; he also designed stage sets and costumes, was an editor at British Vogue when Lee Miller contributed and was a wicked diarist.
Hugo Vickers is Beaton’s chosen biographer.
For Art Group members only. Free. Booking is required. You need to pay £10 when booking a guest from outside the Club.

3. Art Group and PhotoClub members are invited to create paintings and photographs for a combined exhibition to celebrate the Club’s 125th anniversary during May and June 2026. The artwork should feature any and all aspects of the Club. Classic views and activities. Also think laterally. Be creative. We want a broad spread of subjects and compositions. There is limited space for display panels around the Club and so we will have a selection process. Take an instruction form from under the Art Group noticeboard in reception or click here to download it

Key Exhibition Dates
By 27 March 2026 – submission of JPEG images of artwork and photographs for the selection process
7th April 2026 – confirmation of selection to the artists and photographers
30th April 2026 – take in of framed paintings; photographs will be printed and framed by PhotoClub
May / June 2026 – exhibition on display
18th June 2026 – Art Group summer garden party, including awards for the favourite artworks
1st July 2026 – take down and collection of artworks

4. Art Visits
Well done if you signed on to one of the private tours of the studios of Plowden & Smith, the fine art restoration and conservation company. These are all full. Make sure the date is in your diary. If the visits are a success, we manage to behave, not knock anything over and engage with the professional teams in the studios I will ask the CEO if we can add some additional dates in April and May.

I know many of you were not able to book onto the private tours of Eric Campus’s amazing personal ceramics collection. I hope to be able to persuade Eric to provide us with a small number of additional dates in the spring.

5. Spring class Exhibition
The spring class exhibition 2026 will be from 16th March to the 19th April and feature one painting from each student in the three acrylics classes, pastels class, and the Monday evening beginner’s class. I will not say its compulsory, but … the exhibition is to show the full range of skills in our classes!

Your tutors will help you choose one of your artworks from the last year. These will be unframed; but if you paint or draw on paper you will be lent mounts so you can attach them securely. Instructions forms will be available at the start of spring term. Let me know if you would like to help hang the exhibition by emailing me at artgroup@roehamptonclub.co.uk

6. Class Exhibition Opening Drinks
Tuesday 17th March 6 to 6.45pm

7. AGM
Tuesday 17th March 6.45 to 7.30pm

8. Art Group summer garden party to celebrate the Club’s 125 year anniversary celebrations
Thursday 18th June 11th June 6pm to 8pm
In the sunken garden around the fountain. Drinks plus canapes.

9. Reading Room exhibition
Do make sure to see the fantastic exhibition of life drawings in the Reading Room this month; if you are inspired then join the life drawing class for the spring term:

Life Drawing Pastels and Painting with Kathy Barker on Wednesday mornings 10am – 1pm

While this class gives you the opportunity to draw in charcoal and pastels, it now includes painting the human form in watercolour and / or acrylics. With a live model each week, you’ll learn key techniques through demonstrations, drawing exercises and lots of one-to-one teaching.

Kathy will give you the guidance you need throughout to help you develop your skills. And you’ll love the friendly and welcome atmosphere, working with fellow students. You’ll need some basic drawing experience to get the best from this class.
