Indoor Golf Centre Member consultation

Member surveys over several years have consistently identified enhanced golf practice facilities as a priority investment area. The Board of Directors has confirmed its support of the building of the Indoor Golf Centre (IGC) in 2026 as proposed by the Golf Committee as this fulfils a key objective endorsed in member surveys (2018, 2022, 2023).

We have 2,000 Members eligible to play golf and many want to practise on their own, with friends and their families including in the evening. We also have Members who may want to try playing indoor golf for fun.

The IGC has been designed with Members and their families in mind – we now have an opportunity to significantly expand our practice facilities and future-proof the golf section.

Approval was received in November 2024 from Wandsworth Council, and the tenders have now been received. The cost has been reviewed and approved by the Finance Committee to allow us to proceed in building the IGC as follows:

◊ 10 indoor bays (7 hitting bays + 3 teaching bays) with state-of-the-art Trackman simulator technology

◊ Social seating and food/beverage vending area to create a modern Golf Hub

IGC consultation results

We are pleased to announce that over 1,700 Members took part in the consultation carried out by GGA Partners for the Club on whether the Club should go ahead and invest in an Indoor Golf Centre (IGC) for all Members to use.

Members expressed their views with three choices –
Yes go ahead – Yes go ahead but have some reservations – No, don’t go ahead –
In total we received 1,740 completed responses with 66.5% (1,157) people choosing ‘Yes’, 12.5% (217) people choosing ‘Yes, with reservations’, and 21.0% (366) choosing ‘No’.

Based on the response rate, these results are statistically significant to a 95% confidence level with a 2% margin of error. That is to say, if we ran the survey 20 more times, in 19 (95%) of those instances we would expect the results to be the same, within a +/- 2% margin. A report grouping the subject of the reservations has been made for the Golf Committee and the Board to review.

The Board of Directors met on Thursday 11th December to consider the result and has given its approval to proceed. It has also asked for a IGC Project Oversight Committee to be formed consisting of Members with expertise and staff to start working closely with the project manager – Sports Clubhouses – to set the ball rolling and look to award the contract to the lowest and best value tender as outlined in the consultation paper.

The Board will ensure that all the comments made by Members are considered carefully by the Project Team and the IGC Oversight Committee will be working hard to ensure disruption to the Club is minimised during the work programme.

Provisional timetable

The outline timetable will be to start erecting the safety fence to the right of the first tee in March so that works can start in April after the Gold Cup Pro-am, Gold Cup and Centenary Putter weekend. With works scheduled to last 40 weeks it is hoped that the new IGC will open in Q1 2027.

The Golf Committee and the Board are pleased that Members have comprehensively supported their wish to invest in an Indoor Golf Centre for golfers and non-golfers alike and thank all Members who have given their views.
