Swansea Ironman 70.3 – a Member’s Story

I am thrilled to share my experience completing my first Ironman 70.3 in Swansea. Having undergone hip surgery eight years ago, simply reaching the start line was a victory in itself, let alone crossing the finish line. The energy on the day was unmatched, making every hour of training and discipline completely worth it.

The race began with a 1.9km harbour swim in surprisingly warm 23°C waters, just one degree shy of a wetsuit ban. Swimming has become my meditation, and I feel so lucky to train across Roehampton Club’s exceptional 25m and 20m pools.

A big thank you to Roehampton Club Swim Teacher; Darren, whose open water streamlining tips and pool drills made a noticeable difference to my speed and technique. I finished the swim in ~36 minutes which was exactly what I was hoping for.

I truly had the best day out from start to finish. Having only taken up cycling a year ago, I paced myself conservatively through the bike leg, taking on 1000m of elevation in scorching 33°C heat.

Although my foot tape came straight off during the swim, I powered through the 21km run and finished surprisingly close to my half marathon personal best despite being injured.

I have already signed up for my next 70.3 in Mallorca next year and intend to take training to the next level to see what I’m capable of. I will definitely be catching up with Darren soon for another lesson.

Roehampton Club Lifeguard Jess Luscombe swims Henley half marathon

In August I took part in the Henley swim 5.5km half marathon event, after having competed in the shorter mile distances in years previous.

It was a really fun event and was great to challenge myself with a longer distance.

I was really happy to come away with 83rd overall and beat my wave time, finishing in 2 hours 19 minutes.

I’m looking forward to stepping up to the full marathon next summer!
