GC inter-club match vs Surbiton

93rd Roehampton Club Gold Cup Challenge

Sponsored by Russell-Cooke Solicitors

Report by CAROLINE SCALLON

After an enforced absence of two years, the Roehampton Club Gold Cup came back to life on Saturday 9th April in perfect golfing weather.

A field of fifty (32 amateurs, 18 professional) women golfers took to the course on a chilly but sunny morning. Roehampton Club was represented by Nicole Stewart, PGA Professional and Member Hyun-Ji Kim.

The Gold Cup was won by professional Hayley Davis (29) from Ferndown Golf Club, for a second time. (In 2018 Hayley shared the Cup with Inci Mehmet.)

The golf course was in excellent condition and came in for much praise from the players, many of whom had not played on such good surfaces all winter. The greens were running at 10.5 on the stimpmeter.

Hayley, a member of the Ladies’ European Tour, recently came a creditable eleventh in South Africa, and certainly got the better of Roehampton Club with rounds of 68 and 69 for a 36-hole total 137 – a record score for the event.

Leading amateur was 15-year-old Matilde Santilli from Foxhills Country Club with rounds of 74 and 72 for a total 146.

Matilde is currently a member of the England South Regional Team, aiming for the national team and university in the USA.

The Gold Cup is part of the Gold Rose double – the first leg played at North Hants on 3rd April – which gives the winner valuable points in the World Amateur Rankings. The crystal trophy (presented by member of North Hants, Justin Rose) was won this year by Luca Thompson (19) from Pavenham Park Golf Club in Bedfordshire.

North Hants was Luca’s first big win on the national circuit and she managed the pressure of producing a decent second score at Roehampton Club to win the Gold Rose Trophy for 2022.

The Club is most grateful to Russell-Cooke Solicitors for their continued sponsorship of this event for the seventeenth time.

Surrey County Derry Cup

Report by JANE PEEL

I’m very pleased to say that Roehampton Club won the Surrey County Derry Cup on Sunday beating Hindhead in the final 2/1.  The match was played at Royal Wimbledon Golf Club in the spring sunshine.

We are thrilled to win this competition for the third time.  It began in October and was played throughout the winter as a round robin, followed by knock out ties.

On our route to the final, we beat Chipstead Golf Club, Walton Heath Golf Club, Woking Golf Club and Betchworth Park Golf Club.

All matches were played home and away apart from the final.

In the final Hannah Li had a fantastic win against the Surrey Ladies’ Champion on the 18th hole, she was magnificently supported by Jo on the bag.

Lorna had a tough opponent who had an excellent day on the greens. Thank you to Caroline Leslie who caddied for her.

I managed to win on the 17th, we had a tight match halving 10 holes! I was kept on track by my caddie, Mary Barlow, thank you. A thank you to Lady Captain, Tricia Morgan for her support throughout the day!

We have a small but very loyal group that play in this competition and I’d like to say a big thank you to all of them who have played in the matches – Hyun-Ji Kim, Jo Thesiger, Ali Jacobs, Lorna Robey, Laura Weatherill and myself.

We look forward to defending our title later this year!

GC inter-club match – Roehampton Club v Surbiton

Sunday 10th April at Roehampton Club

Report by TIM RUSSELL

Roehampton Club beat Surbiton 7-0

The top pairs, Tim Russell and Joel Taylor for Roehampton Club and George Noble (a late replacement for Don Beck) and Alison Maugham for Surbiton had a tight doubles encounter, with Surbiton coming back from 5-2 down to win the first game 7-5. Roehampton Club improved to win the next two games 7-3, 7-5.

In the reverse singles Mark van Loon ran out a comfortable winner 7-2,7-2 against Martin Burger and Dan Pearson won a tight match at the golden hoop against Stephen Harbron, 7-3, 3-7, 7-6 with an excellent long jump shot (over his own ball which he had injudiciously left blocking hoop and clearance.)

After tea, Roehampton completed a clean sweep with Tim Russell beating George Noble 7-2, 7-1; Joel beating Alison in a close contest 7-6, 5-7, 7-4; Mark beating Stephen 7-2, 7-4 and Dan beating Martin Burger 7-1, 7-4.

Thanks to the Roehampton Club grounds staff who presented three fast, true lawns.
