2021 Event Reviews

English National Opera (ENO) – HMS Pinafore at London’s Coliseum

On Thursday 18th November, after a light, early supper at the Club, a small group of Members set off by coach for an entertaining evening of light opera at the London Coliseum. This ENO version of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic opera was filled with swashbuckling adventure and laughter.

Here’s what you thought:

Enjoyed not having to organise anything myself and the ease of travel. And Francesca’s friendly and efficient organising skills!

Without the Club’s initiative in making all the arrangements I probably would not have made the effort to enjoy a really great production. Door-to-door transport is a great incentive. Don’t understand why more Members didn’t come along.

Wonderful show and congenial company at the table. Thank you for organising this event.

Halloween Workshop and Pool Party

On Friday 29th October, some of the younger Members of the Club enjoyed the spookiest workshop of the year. They made colourful masks, decorated creepy cookies, and carved pumpkins to celebrate Halloween.

The afternoon ended with a competitive pool party.

Here’s what you thought:

‘The pumpkin carved was a good size and good quality. There was a nice variety of activities.’

‘Fun factor – as soon as we left, my son said unprompted that he loved it and wanted to do it again, so for that reason alone, I would sign him next year.’

‘Monty says it was really fun carving the pumpkins, and he enjoyed the pool activities too. He loved it all! (Thank you from me for organising it.)’

Music Night in the Bar with Robert Habermann – Tuesday 26 October, 2021

On Tuesday evening this week, over 40 Members enjoyed a live performance by singer Robert Habermann. Robert performed his show called His Way, a selection of songs and stories of singer Frank Sinatra. The show covers the highs and lows of his life together with the songs that he made famous. It was a truly entertaining show.

Here’s what you thought.

‘A very good professional and enjoyable evening – so easy on the ears – lovely old melodies that for the most part, everyone knew – more like that please!’

‘We enjoyed listening to the singer, had good food and company. A relaxed evening which was just right.’

‘Relaxed, informal and enjoyable at a good price.’

Walking tour of Greenwich – Tuesday 21st September

After following many of her online virtual talks in Lockdown, Members finally had the chance to experience a live walking tour with Club Member and Blue Barge guide Viv Haxby.

She took Members from the London Eye Pier on a Clipper Boat to Greenwich, where the tour started, and Viv explained the history of the building and the general area of Greenwich.

Here’s what you thought:

‘Viv is a fantastic guide with astonishingly detailed knowledge and vivid descriptions. It was really interesting, and I learned a lot. Very much enjoyed it.’

‘Viv Haxby – she is an excellent guide – I liked the whole outing, including the boat trips.’

Chelsea Flower Show – Thursday 23rd September

Members enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Club before being escorted to the Chelsea Flower Show, which, for the first time in history, was held in September, providing a unique opportunity for those who visited the show.

Gardens and exhibits were filled with the glories of autumn, with asters, dahlias and salvias in full bloom, trees laden with fruit, and even plump pumpkins adorning displays.

Here’s what you thought:

‘Thank you very much for organising our outing to the Chelsea Flower Show. Beatrice and I had a lovely time. Lunch was delicious, our taxi drivers were efficient and charming, and everything went really well.’

‘Thanks for organising the flower show, and the lunch was wonderful.’

‘Alas, Blackhurst & Frei’ Thursday 9th September, 7.30pm

We opened the autumn/winter season of the Social Scene with a brilliant double act by Club Members and professional journalists Chris Blackhurst and Matt Frei. Led by Chief Executive Marc Newey as compere, Chris and Matt gave us their insight on many topics, including Afghanistan, Brexit, Covid-19 and the Royal family. It was an enjoyable, sold-out evening with excellent food, and it was lovely to welcome Members back to socialise.

Here’s what you thought:

‘Very enjoyable evening; nice to be back dining with friends among lots of others ( which has not been possible for months); Chris and Matt in conversation were very entertaining.’

‘My first event at the Club. I thought it was a lovely friendly evening. The food was great, and the two journalists were brilliant.’

‘Just wonderful to see old friends again and to meet new ones! A GREAT evening!’

Curry and Quiz Night, Wednesday 15th September

After over a year, we could finally enjoy a live Curry and Quiz Night, always one of the most popular social and competitive events at the Club.

Over 70 Members competed for their team to be the first name to be engraved on the new Roehampton Club Quiz Night Trophy.   It went to a tight break between teams, ‘SUSPICIOUS MINDS’ and ‘EMAWINNER’, and after a fierce final round, the winner was ‘EMAWINNER.’  In third place, was ‘ASK ME LATER.’  A special mention to the team with the best name ‘VINDALOOZERS’.

Here’s what you thought:

‘Bringing together lots of Members with different interests. Terrific compering and event run at a perfect pace. Excellent range of questions. Excellent drinks service.’

‘Thank you for an excellent quiz last night.  We all had a wonderful time, the questions were not too hard and not too easy, they kept everyone’s attention, the delivery was superb as always, and the food was scrummy. Excellent service from the waiting team, and the room looked great.‘

‘Well organised and enjoyable quiz.’
