Virtual Talk with Viv Haxby – Colourful Consorts – Monday 8th March, 6.30pm

Roehampton Club Member and Blue Badge Guide, Viv Haxby, once more entranced Members with her knowledgeable talk on four of the most colourful of the Queen Consorts. Here’s what you had to say:

Last night’s talk was excellent, and we loved the way Viv Haxby drew out the local connections to Marble Hill House, Kew Palace etc.

Another very enjoyable evening.

Thank you for organising a most enjoyable one and a half hours with Viv last night. And thank you to Viv for such an informative and interesting presentation on the four consorts she spoke about. Despite being restricted for so long now, it was my first venture to the world of lectures on Zoom. What else have I missed?! However, I look forward to the day when we can join her in person!

An excellent talk this evening. I could quite happily have listened to Viv for another hour.

Virtual Talk on the History of Backgammon with Chris Bray – Wednesday 10th March

Last week Members enjoyed a fascinating talk by Chris Bray on the origin and history of the game of backgammon right through to the modern day. Backgammon is a popular game at the Club with Monthly Club Nights offering a mixture of instruction, tournament play and casual play, and weekly Teatime Backgammon which is aimed at beginners and intermediates (when we re-open!). If you are interested in more information, please email chris.bray@roehamptonclub.co.uk.

Here’s what you had to say:

Thank you very much Chris for a wonderful hour!

Thanks very much. Really interesting.

Very well done – live, novel entertainment at a time when canned, streamed ‘entertainment’ is what we all have to suffer.

Live Lounge Series, an Evening of Music and Laughter with Alistair McGowan, 11th March

The last in our current Live Lounge Series, Alistair entertained over 100 households with his wonderful piano playing interspersed with the wit and humour we know him for. It was a most enjoyable evening. Here’s what you had to say:

A lovely mixture of comedy, impressions, piano and info about the pieces/composer

The impressions were terrific

Best Live Lounge event yet! Alistair McGowan was brilliant – very funny and entertaining and, best of all, a very talented pianist. Not only did he do justice to Erik Satie’s music but he also gave us an insight into Satie’s life and times. Felt very privileged to spend half an hour in his company

An Evening with Darren Anderton – Wednesday 17th March

The Club was fortunate to persuade one of the most gifted English football players of his generation, Darren Anderton, to join us for a virtual talk via Zoom from his LA home. Marc talked to Darren about his time with Spurs, England as well as the modern game and with lots of stories and anecdotes it was a great evening. Here’s what you had to say:

Really enjoyed the evening, what a great guy Darren is and a very talented sportsman to boot. Great to see he still loves Spurs so much
Darren spoke so well and good stories of his days at Pompey as well as Spurs and England
Great fun and interesting stories of what happens behind the scenes – Venables and Hoddle were revered as Managers by the players it seems
