Snooker Blog

I am delighted to announce that the Roehampton Club Snooker Team has won the London Clubs Snooker Team Competition for the fourth time. The annual competition organised by the East India Club has been running for many years and we won it in 2014, 2020, 2022, and now in 2026.

It is played off handicap, but Roehampton Club often has to give rather than take points. We won three rounds on the way to the final beating Oxford and Cambridge, East India Club and the Savile Club on the way to the final, which was against Brooks’s at the East India Club.

The team for most rounds was Alex Rose, Andrew Nowell, Iain Welsh and Matt Woolston and all players contributed well to a string of healthy victories, including a 4-0 win over East India in the singles.

Matt could not play in the final so Pradip Patel stepped in to help us to victory. Your reporter was not at his best in the final, but I think it is fair to say that the whole campaign was a great team effort. My thanks to all players and to joint captains Iain and Matt for organising us.

Meanwhile we are also doing well in the new London Clubs Pairs competition. Pradip and I are in one semi-final, whilst Kevin Grealis and John Macnamara are in the other. Let’s hope for an all Roehampton Club final.

Alex Rose reached the final of the London Singles Scratch competition recently, so we are certainly holding our own in the London Clubs scene at the moment.

The snooker leagues are well under way. We now have six leagues. Please let me know if you would like to enter the leagues. We have three rounds per year and participants are expected to play five to six matches per league. The Summer Handicap Knockout is nearly complete; Pradip Patel and Henry Neame are set to play the final soon.  Good luck to them.

I have recently met two professionals who are willing to offer coaching sessions, now that our regular coach Martin O’Donnell is happily busy on the professional tour (currently ranked 56). Some of you might remember Katie Martyn, the professional at the RAC club, who visited us a few years ago. She is ready to come back to us.

Another professional, Sean O’Sullivan (no relation), currently ranked 113 in the world, is also happy to visit. Once I have arranged some dates with them I will let Members know how to book a lesson.

In the meantime, enjoy your snooker, and please let me know by email if you would like to get more involved.
