Snooker Blog

I am delighted to announce that Roehampton Club were victorious last week at the East India Club where we won the 2020 London Clubs Snooker Final. We last won this in 2013, so it has been a long wait to reclaim the cup. My congratulations to the team of Alex Rose, Pradip Patel and Scott Stanley, who allowed me to come along as number four. The match involved four singles matches of one frame each, which left us at 2-2 after Alex and I won our frames in close battles. Alex and I were then destroyed in the doubles, but Pradip and Scott dug in and won a very long and attritional frame to force a draw of 3-3.

It was then left to Alex, our top ranking player, to take on their formidable number one in a 6-red ball decider. It was a very tense frame with East India taking an early lead, but Alex showed no signs of giving up, (apart from a few enjoyable errors), and with a daring double on the blue he set up a nail-biting win. It was a tense but enjoyable night and our thanks go to the East India Club for their hospitality and fair play, and for organising the competition itself. We look forward to 2021’s competition. There are some friendly inter-club matches in the pipeline so please look out for emails.

Meanwhile the Atherton Collins Scratch KO is to be decided soon between Alex Rose and Simon Clarke, good luck to them both. The Summer Handicap KO is in the quarter final stages, and I have sent out a message asking for players to step up for the Winter Handicap KO. Please email me if you have not done so already. All club members are eligible to take part, so if you would like to have a go at Snooker, please let me know on anowell@harrodian.com. The first round of leagues for a while has only a month left to run, with few matches played so far, so please start organising them as soon as possible to allow us to make some fair promotions and demotions.

Finally, Alun Hughes has kindly arranged for our coach, John Woods to come for some tuition on 31st October. Sadly, as I write there has been little take up so please email me ASAP if you would like a slot.

Happy potting,
Andy Nowell
