Senior Men’s Golf Chair’s Report

I hope that you have all enjoyed the summer. Although the weather remains mild the course appears to be showing its autumnal teeth, at least to a high handicapper like me. We no longer have the extra run on the fairways and the wet rough is challenging. Fallen leaves will add to the difficulties of those who miss the fairway. There must be a moral there.

I hope that you are enjoying the new facilities upstairs in the bar and being able to use the exit from the changing rooms to the course.

Justin will no doubt have written about the Captain and Past Captains match against the Club. It was an excellent occasion. I was honoured to be picked to play as a ‘ringer’ for Justin’s team. I am taking this opportunity to mention the superb round of one of our regulars, my partner on the day, John Randel. He carried me round playing superbly. We think that he was only 4 over par for holes 2 to 17 including successive birdies on holes 4 and 5 and lipping out for a birdie on 6.

August and September Results

There were two outstanding rounds in the August Grail in August. My predecessor Douglas Millar triumphed with 42 points. I was delighted to present him with the trophy.

Ian Taylor-Restell came second with 41 points. The other prize winners were Robert Woolf with 37 points, Denis Gould with 36 points (countback) and Mike Kappler with 36 points.

May I thank Clive Nicholson for supervising the Autumn Medal in my absence at a funeral. There was some very good scoring. Peter Sabine led the way with a Nett 65. The other winners, all under Par, were in order Trevor Hearle with a Nett 68 (countback), Alan Thurlow with a Nett 68 and John Dawes with a Nett 69. John also had the best score on the day with a Gross 74.

Congratulations to Roy Martin on winning the Annual Medal with a total Nett score of 141. What consistency.

The team Stableford with Mulligan competition was won by John Cardwell, Gilbert Ellacombe, Terry Dillon and Suresh Vara with a fourball adjusted score of 85 points. The runners up were Nigel Karmel, Andrew Hine and Paul Roberts with 84 points.

Tim Russell, Martin Waller, Gilbert Ellacombe and Denis Gould won the Stableford ‘Joker’ competition with a score of 103 points. All players had a joker on both the front and back nine holes. Tim Russell was in particularly fine form. His team streaked ahead of other teams playing.

Forthcoming Events

We, of course, have the September Grail on 24th September. Further ahead we have the shogun start Grail on 29th October followed by the AGM. In December we have our annual lunch after a 9 hole competition in the morning. That takes place this year on 10th December.
