Senior Men’s Golf Chair’s Report

My predecessor, Douglas, used to say that players were on a roll and this month a number of seniors fit within that category, including Douglas himself who has had two splendid
rounds in the two Grails and in the Stableford competition. The star of the month who is certainly on a roll is Richard Lurcott who won both Grails convincingly. Another highlight was Peter Bateman’s hole in one on the 17th. For someone who is thrilled to be on the green in one on that hole, I am deeply impressed.

June and July results

The two Grail results were as follows:

1st Richard Lurcott 41 points
2nd Peter Sabine 40 points
3rd Douglas Millar 39 points
4th Martin Waller 37 points

1st Richard Lurcott 43 points
2nd Ian Taylor-Restell 40 points
3rd Alun Hughes 39 points
4th Peter Sabine 38 points (countback)
5th Julian Bass 38 points (countback)
6th Kevin Doyle 38 points

We have held two ‘friendly’ competitions this month.

Peter Bateman, Hassan Dajani and Martin Waller won the Joker competition on 25th June with an incredible 96 points helped by Peter’s eagle on the 17th. The runners up were Brian Hall, Paul Gordon-Brown and Clive Nicholson with 91 points. This was a huge score for second place with some spectacular scoring.

On 16th July the Stableford with mulligan competition was won by Simon Lucas, David Openshaw and Suresh Advani with 88 points. The runners up on countback were Douglas Millar, Quentin Robey and Denis Gould with 87 points.

Forthcoming events

The greenkeepers have now started work on the four new greens. The work is in essence precautionary but nonetheless essential to ensure we have good facilities year round. I hope that we will be using the new greens in September and possibly for the Grail at the very end of August. Despite the shortening of four holes it will still be possible to put in cards for handicap purposes. Matt or Oli can explain what is required.

Matt and I are discussing the calendar for next year to include two shot gun starts for the Grail including the AGM and to move the Summer Invitation event back to July. A number of colleagues are away in mid June so I hope the date can be changed.
