Senior Men’s Golf Chair’s Report
Despite the works which we all hope will be completed before the August Grail on 26th August (no promises) the golf has been enjoyable during the summer. The course is in great condition. We notice this all the more when we play away matches on brown and parched fairways.
The Grail was played on another hot and sunny day on 29th July. The scoring unsurprisingly was high. Murray Feely won with 41 points, closely followed by David Openshaw, fresh from his commentary on YouTube on the MacRobertson Shield held at the Club, with 40 points (countback). Ken Pratt joined Murray and David on the imaginary podium also with 40 points. Simon Prince scored 39 points to come fourth.
Other results
The popular Texas Scramble caused the judges (a rather grand description of your Chair) some difficulty as there were three teams with net scores of 51 with different handicaps. Eventually the winners were Evert-Johan Schenk, Nicolas De Wasseige, Peter Sabine and Terry Dillon with John Fooks, Danny Gesua, John Tyrwhitt and Egbert Veldman second and Michael Godfrey, Andrew Hine and Ken Pratt third.
There were some very good scores in the Yellow Ball competition on 6th August. Giles Clark, who nearly drove the 18th with the yellow ball, Michael Godfrey and Brian Hall were the winners with 124 points closely followed by Terry Dillon, Trevor Hearle and Peter Sabine with 122 points. Duncan Christie-Miller, Kevin Doyle, Ian Taylor-Restell were third with 116 points.
We played the team Joker game on 12th August. Many teams made use of the shortened 12th to score 16 points. Chris Cowan, Danny Gesua and Trevor Hearle chose another hole on the back nine and scored 103 points to win the competition. I gather it was a real team effort with all three team members scoring over 36 points – well played. Martin Waller, Gilbert Ellacombe and Giles Clark came second with 100 points – Gilbert had a particularly good score – a gross 85.
In cooler conditions on 19th August Hassan Dajani, Enrique Febrer-Bowen, Danny Gesua and Nigel Karmel danced convincingly to victory in the Waltz with 103 points followed by the well-choreographed team of Kevin Doyle, Alun Hughes, Clive Nicholson and Ian Taylor-Restell in second place with 100 points.
Forthcoming events
I am delighted to advertise the Salute the Services Golf Day on Friday 4th September. The charity we will be supporting this year is Combat Stress. Duncan Christie- Miller has been organising this splendid event for a number of years. He is hoping to arrange a small display of military vehicles to add to our enjoyment. Please do support the event. It will be a shot gun start at 9.30am followed by a two-course lunch. If you cannot play contributions will be gratefully received. Book via Intelligent Golf.
