Senior Men’s Golf Chair’s Report
I am sure that I speak for others when I say how nice it is to see the spring not only the flourishing trees, shrubs and flowers with which we are blessed but the firmer conditions under foot, few, if any, temporary greens and only a couple of winter tees. The mats have been required where works are taking place e.g. the wall at the 14th and the net at the 1st. The temporary wall at the 14th works well allowing for reconstruction of the brick wall in due course. As a result we have fully utilised our timed slots having 11 teams in 10 slots earlier in the month – thank you Dirhen for speeding us all through.
February and March results
There are only three competitions to report this month as a result of maintenance at the end of February.
The yellow ball competition always has wide ranging scores. When the teams coalesce perfectly the scoring can be very high, but when it is lost all hope of a good score disappears. The competition on 4th March was no exception. There was a difference of nearly 40 points between the first and last team. Two teams scored 11 points more than the third place team which happened to be mine so no prizes again … Donald Mckenzie, Rai Vara and Julian Bass won on countback with 112 points. The runners up were Tim Russell, Nigel Brown and Denis Gould also with 112 points.
Gilbert Ellacombe kindly ran the team event on 11th March. He tells me that the weather was pleasant but quite gusty, hence the ‘average’ scoring. He had a busy time adjusting the scores of 8 of the 10 teams. The 10th hole is a tough par 4 from the red tees. Yet again Raj Vara was a winner. Simon Duvivier and John Tyrwhitt joined Raj winning with 78 points. The runners up on countback were David Bouch, Brian Hall and Nigel Karmel with 75 points.
On a beautiful warm sunny day on 18th March 35 seniors played their jokers in the Stableford competition. Thanks to the wise advice of David Bouch your Chair took his two jokers on the ‘easiest’ holes, 5 and 13 with the satisfactory result of 14 points. That helped David Bouch, Nicholas Brown and Douglas Millar to win with 102 points. The runners up were Tim Russell, Michael Godfrey and Mark Tydeman with 91 points.
Forthcoming events
I am pleased to advise that there will be more slots on future Wednesdays as there is a welcome keenness to pay on Wednesday morning. The Grail returns next week on 25th March.
