Senior Men’s Golf Chair’s Report

As we start the programme of Seniors’ golf for 2024, I am disappointed that I have not been able to take part as I have regularly done in the past few years. A sporting injury to my ankle suffered in the mid 1980s has finally caught up with me to the extent that the doctors say that it is degenerating with osteo-arthritis. This has restricted my mobility and means that in this weather I am struggling to do 18 holes. I apologise to all Seniors for my inability at the moment to take a fuller and proper part in our activities while I ponder what best I can do to improve the situation.

The Seniors have begun the post-Christmas period slowly with small fields for our regular Wednesday events. Happily, the numbers playing have increased week by week so that by 10th January, 35 players braved the early morning frost to play.

Team Stableford: 27th December

Two days after Christmas, a few hardy souls played in the senior Roll Up which took the form of a team Stableford. The winning team was made up of Hassan Dajani, Simon Lucas, Gilbert Ellacombe, and David Moss who won with a 4-ball adjusted 77 Points.

Team Stableford with Joker: 3rd January

The following week, on 3rd January the competition was a Team Stableford with Joker. Congratulations to Nicholas Brown, Brian Hall and Trevor Hearle, who won with an outstanding total of 97 Points!

Texas Scramble: 10th January

Despite the early morning frost, temporary greens and punishing rough, scoring was particularly good in a Texas Scramble competition yesterday. Clearly some players thrive in winter conditions as two members of the winning group had been in the winners’ circle in the two previous weeks. Congratulations to Nicholas Brown, Hassan Dajani, Derek Downham and Andrew Hine who triumphed with a score of Nett 53!

The runners up on countback were Russell Gooding, Richard Hinchcliffe, David Paterson, and John Tyrwhitt with a Nett 56. Several teams scored below nett 60.

I hope to be back on the course in a couple of weeks’ time. Certainly, watching the groups come down the eighteenth, I thought that the course looked magnificent. The reports from those who took part indicated that the work of Peter Bradburn and his staff had paid off in making the course playable after all the rain and flooding elsewhere around London.

Matches

The list of matches played by the seniors with other Clubs in 2024 is now on IG. I encourage all seniors to sign up to play, by joining the Senior Squad and indicating availability for particular matches. We hope to select as many people as possible who want to represent Roehampton seniors over the course of the season.

Shortly seniors will be offered the chance to purchase team kit in Club colours. It always looks impressive if we play in the same kit. Watch out for the email which will go out soon.
