Senior Golfers’ Report

One advantage of having a slow golfing start to the year is that I could start reading one of my Christmas presents, a book about golf’s strangest rounds. One tale in this anthology which immediately caught my eye was an account of a golfer winning a tournament at Wimbledon Park Golf Club, having played a hole with a ball still in its wrapper. Who remembers when balls came individually wrapped? The secretary of Wimbledon Park wrote to the R&A at St Andrews for a ruling. With the wrapper on, was the ball either too heavy or too large to comply with the rules? Without conclusive proof to the contrary, the player was allowed to claim his trophy. This is just one memory of Wimbledon Park which will keep its name alive now it is no longer an eighteen-hole course.

Back to senior golf at Roehampton Club. Our first roll up of the year on 5th January saw 28 players in a four clubs and a putter team Stableford competition. I picked the format in anticipation that it might be a carry-only day and only a couple of trolleys were taken onto the course. Those who took part had an enjoyable day on the course in sunny conditions!

Congratulations to Hassan Dajani, Kevin Doyle, Ian Taylor-Restell and John Cardwell, who made up the winning the team with 100 points.  The runners-up were Douglas Millar, Nicholas Brown, Clive Nicholson and Martin Flint with 97 points

John Cardwell was declared the winner of the individual competition, scoring 36 points.

Yesterday we had another team Stableford using the format, step up Waltz – one two three, one two three etc. It was a lovely winter day where 24 seniors took part in the Roll Up.

Congratulations to Nigel Brown, Hassan Dajani and Ev Schenk, winning the Step-Up Waltz with 71 points! The runners up were Duncan Christie-Miller, Don McKenzie and Raj Vara with 67 points.

Please note that sign up for the Grail on the 26thJanuary is now open.
