Men’s Golf Seniors Report

The changing of the clocks back to GMT has signalled the start of winter golf. Because seniors – especially older ones like me – no longer hit the ball very far off the tee, half of the par fours on the course become three shotters to reach the green as there is much less run on the fairways.  The course still looks the part despite the heavy rain we have experienced from time to time in recent days. Given the shortened period of daylight it is important to maintain a good pace of play to enable later starters to get round in the limited daylight hours.

We started our winter competitions on 3rd November when seniors’ time was allocated first to matches in the Colum Sharkey Knockout.  On 10th November we played our regular team stableford with every player player having a joker to double their score on a hole nominated in advance. In dank conditions, some showed themselves capable of decent scoring. Because of late additions and dropouts we went out in groups of three or four. The winning teams on this occasion were

4-Ball team – Duncan Christie-Miller, David Moss, Trevor Hearle and Ken Pratt
3-Ball team – David Bouch, Raj Vara and Malcolm Turner

At the request of the Sports Office, we played this competition off the red tees. With the world handicapping system enabling fair competition off whichever tee we play, it will be interesting to see what Tristan McIllroy and Louis Laville make of our results. My group of three went round in under three and a half hours.
