Pure Sports Medicine

Specialist Hand Therapy now available at Pure Sports Medicine

Pure Sports Medicine Roehampton is delighted to introduce a new Specialist Hand Therapy Service, led by Becky Withycombe, an experienced Specialist Hand Therapist and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist with more than 10 years of experience across both NHS and private practice.

Most people are familiar with physiotherapy for common problems such as back pain, knee injuries, or shoulder conditions. However, hand therapy is a highly specialised area focused on the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of conditions affecting the hand, wrist, and upper limb.

When these areas are injured or painful, the impact can be surprisingly significant, affecting everything from sport and work to daily activities such as driving, cooking, typing, or even opening a jar.

The hands are among the most complex and frequently used structures in the body. Loss of strength, stiffness, swelling, pain, or reduced mobility can quickly affect independence and quality of life. That’s why specialist treatment can make such an important difference.

At Pure Sports Medicine Roehampton Club, Becky provides expert care for a wide range of hand and wrist conditions, helping patients regain function, confidence, and quality of life.

Supporting recovery from injury and surgery

Hand therapy plays a vital role in recovery following acute injuries, surgery, fractures, tendon and ligament injuries, nerve conditions, and persistent musculoskeletal problems.

Treatment is tailored to each individual and may include:
• Specialist hand and wrist rehabilitation
• Bespoke splinting
• Exercise programmes
• Hands-on therapy
• Wax therapy
• Scar management
• Wound care
• Return-to-work guidance
• Return-to-sport rehabilitation

Whether recovering from a fractured wrist, tendon repair, ligament reconstruction, or elective surgery, specialist rehabilitation can often play a crucial role in restoring movement, strength, and confidence.

Helping Members stay active

For Roehampton Club Members, hand and wrist conditions can have a direct impact on participation in sport and leisure activities. Golfers may experience wrist pain, thumb arthritis, or tendon problems that affect grip strength and swing mechanics. Tennis and padel players can develop repetitive strain injuries, tendon irritation, thumb pain, and wrist overuse conditions. Even regular gym training can place significant stress on the small joints and soft tissues of the hand.

One area Becky frequently treats is hand and wrist osteoarthritis, a common condition that can affect grip strength, dexterity, and day-to-day function. While osteoarthritis cannot be reversed, many people are surprised by how much can be done to improve symptoms. Treatment may include education, tailored exercise programmes, heat and wax therapy, splinting, joint protection strategies, and practical modifications to daily activities. The aim is to reduce pain, maintain function, and help people continue enjoying the activities they love.

Expert care for every lifestyle

One of the unique aspects of hand therapy is the variety of people who benefit from it. Throughout her career, Becky has worked with elite athletes, professional footballers, cricketers, golfers, tennis players, office workers, musicians, skilled craftspeople, and manual workers. Each places different demands on their hands, requiring rehabilitation plans tailored to their individual goals.

As a former field hockey player with a continuing passion for sport and exercise, Becky understands the importance of returning to activity safely and confidently. However, her approach is not limited to athletes. The same principles of expert assessment, evidence-based rehabilitation, and personalised care apply to everyone, regardless of their sporting background or lifestyle.

Whether the goal is returning to competitive golf, getting back on the tennis court, resuming work after surgery, or simply performing everyday tasks pain-free, treatment is always designed around what matters most to the individual.
