Nigel Wilson’s classes

Nigel Wilson held another successful workshop at the end of June on Studio Lighting. This was well attended and enjoyed by all who attended this Studio Portraiture day.

Nigel Wilson’s popular classes will begin again on Thursday 18th September for five weeks, followed by a two week break before starting again on Thursday 6th November to 4th December. On 4th December there will only be the morning class followed by our annual Christmas lunch. The morning class will be from 10.30am to 1pm and the afternoon class will be 1pm to 3.30pm.

The format will remain much the same with an introduction to a notable Photographer and their work. He discusses aspects of their work and what makes them stand out from the crowd. He will usually give us information about topical photographic events and exhibitions to keep us up to date with what is on in London and close by. Homework of a practical nature will be set and critiqued during the next class. There will be one outing to photograph an area of interest, for instance in the past we have visited Southwark Cathedral, Regents Canal, The British Museum and more.

Dates for the upcoming classes are:
Thursday 18th September, for five weeks 10.30am to 1pm or 1 to 3.30pm finishing 16th October with a two week break with the second set starting on 6th November until 4th December. The morning class will be followed by our Christmas lunch.

Photoclub lecture: The Indestructible Lee Miller

Tuesday 14th October at 7.30pm

50 minutes. 280 images. Written and presented by Antony Penrose, her son and biographer.

From an early age Lee Miller learned the chances life brought needed her skilful and courageous adaptation to make them work for her. Born 1907 in America, she morphed from a young artist to a top fashion model. In Paris she became a surrealist photographer also shooting fashion for American Vogue. Back in New York she had a highly successful studio but left to marry an Egyptian and become a photographer of that land. At the outbreak of WW2 she arrived in London, returning to fashion photography for Vogue and later became their war correspondent with the US Army in Europe. Her final career was as a surrealist gourmet cook in her last home, Farleys House in Sussex. Her life was filled with passion, heartbreak and high drama. Her secret in moving forward was to grab her chances with both hands. It made her indestructible in the sense that today her work is the subject of many books, TV documentaries, international exhibitions and now a major movie titled LEE, starring Kate Winslet as Lee Miller.

Originally created for the exhibition The Indestructible Lee Miller. Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA 2015.
