Senior Golfers Report

The seniors have effectively missed some Wednesdays this month when we were not able to get onto the course for a full eighteen holes. During the restrictions resulting from course maintenance last week, a nine-hole team Stableford competition was held with David Bouch, Brian Hall and Neil Taberner winning the pot. As regular readers will know, David and Brian have regularly contended for prizes in recent times but it was particularly gratifying to see Neil playing well after a protracted period with injuries.

April Grail

All was set fair for the final Wednesday of the month when we competed for the April Grail. Well over 50 seniors entered and played in cool overcast conditions. Scoring was good with a fifth of the field bettering their handicaps. Some familiar names were at the top of the leader board. The results for this stableford competition were as follows:

1st        Alec Lever                    43 points
2nd       Ian Taylor-Restell         42 points
3rd        Hassan Dajani              40 points (countback)
4th        Simon Duvivier 40 points (countback)

I had some sympathy for our runner up who went out at 8.20am and then had to wait till the penultimate group, playing over two and a half hours later for someone to better his score. Well played Alec and congratulations to all the prize winners.

Seniors’ matches

Since my last report we have played two matches, away at the RAC at Epsom and away at Richmond. Both matches were lost and we fared particularly badly at the RAC. A new unfamiliar course found our team wanting. Contrast this with the John Ling trophy team which achieved a comprehensive victory at Camberley Heath.  Congratulations to the team lead by Nigel Brown which also included our Captain Paul Taylor.

Competition results

What I haven’t reported in the Recorder before are the results of our two winter knockouts. The Colum Sharkey individual knockout was won by Michael Murray who defeated Roy Martin in the final.

The Winter foursomes was also completed with some familiar names appearing in the final. Hassan Dajani and Nigel Brown defeated David Bouch and Michael Godfrey. Have Hassan and Nigel ever had a more successful time on the course? Congratulations to all of those mentioned. I shall be looking for an opportunity to present the two trophies soon. Those interested in the progress through the rounds can look up the results on IG looking up ‘competitions’, ‘knockouts’ and then ‘Colum Sharkey’ or ‘Senior Winter Foursomes’.

Summer Eclectic

Our summer eclectic is now open for sign up and the April Grail will be the first qualifying event. All seniors are welcome to enter to win the Hamid Lari trophy. The competition will run to the end of September.

Finally, seniors will have received an email inviting them to sign up for the Seniors Invitation Day on Wednesday 29th June. Please line up your guest and get in quickly. Numbers are limited by the fact that we have a shotgun start.
