Senior Golfers Report

When I reported in the last edition, Alec Lever had that day won the April Grail leaving no time to show him proudly displaying the trophy. I am now able to repair that omission. 43 Stableford points is a great score worthy of winning any competition.

The course is in terrific condition, greens fast and true, and fairways looking like carpets. It is a privilege for us to play here. The only drawback for hackers like me is that the strong grass growth has made the rough even more punishing than usual. Playing in a match against Coombe Wood on Monday, I found myself having to keep a close eye on our opponents’ drives. Once off the fairway, balls were difficult to find unless you were able to mark the spot from the tee where the ball had landed. Even then, our opponents managed to lose a number of balls on the way round. We halved the match 3-3, but I was able to claim a personal victory thanks to my partner Stephen Jones.

Spring Medal

Our main event this week has been the Spring Medal which had 55 entrants.  Unusually we had to play part of the round in wet conditions giving an advantage to the early starters who had largely completed their rounds before the rains came. There were some very good scores, eight competitors playing to their handicaps and better.

The winners were:

  1. Tim Frosdick Nett 67  (on countback)
  2. Hassan Dajani Nett 67
  3. Alun Hughes Nett 68
  4. Ken Pratt Nett 69

The winner of the prize for the best gross score was Peter McGovern who carded an 81. In fact, our nett winner scored 79 gross but could not be awarded both prizes! Congratulations to all the successful players – especially to Peter who had the worst of the weather. A photo of our winner with the trophy will follow in the next issue of the Recorder.

Invitation day

Sign up for the invitation day is open already and can be accessed from a link provided in an email to seniors. 20 golfers have already signed up and paid. Numbers are limited as it is a shotgun start and so it is important to sign up soon to avoid disappointment. Sign up here
