Men’s Golf Report

The glorious summer sunshine has left our golf course looking and playing beautifully and I hope that you are all enjoying and appreciating Roehampton Club as much as I am. With superbly presented fairways and greens, the look of the course has been enhanced by the colourful flowers and plants behind many of the greens, with the back of the first, seventh, twelfth and sixteenth particularly catching my eye. Greenstaff please take a bow and on behalf of all golfers, many thanks.

Mixed Golf

Roger Perry writes:
A lot better turnout on a blissful afternoon was turned into 3 groups on the 1st and 2 groups on the 10th bringing round to the bar in record time
The winners off the tenth were Peter Reid and Marie Perry with a great core of 17 forllowed in by Patsy Miller and Keolila ( count back ) with 16.
The winners of the 1st were Susan Major and yours truly ( on countback ) with 18 followed by David Moss and Claire Martin despite their 2 for 4 on the 4th
Slightly more ladies than men but a great trend – 4 the first event, 14 for the second and 20 for the third – it would be lovely to continue the progress at the next on July 11th.
Judy Gowing represented the ladies committee and she and I looked with horror at the snakes and ladders submitted as score cards so will be giving better instructions to the competitors next time as it took quite a while to get a result with most of the cards needing to be re-scored!
All agreed it was a really fun format for a summer’s evening.

Last Thursday Stableford 31st May

Peter McGovern continued his rich vein of form by taking the honours here with a fine 38 points, winning from Simon Butler on 37 points, who was second on count back ahead of Paul Gordon-Brown.

Knockout Competitions

The Men’s committee are pleased to see that much great and not so great golf continues to be played, with six of the 16 Lockwood Foster third round games already completed, and one of the eight four ball better ball matches. Please keep ahead of the deadlines before the World Cup distracts you too much.

Captain and Pro Matches 2018

I must say, how much I am enjoying these fixtures , and since my last report I have doubled the number of completed matches to six .
First up were those legendary single handicap former captains, messrs Loggie and Waunford-Brown, resplendent in their finest golf gear that won’t be found at TK Maxx. The boys found the two Richards on top form, and after three very enjoyable hours, the Captain and Pro triumphed narrowly.
We did however meet our match on Sunday when Gerry Dennigan and an especially inspired Brian O’Boyle played around seven shots inside their handicaps to win 3 and 1. Very well played to the Celts! (Pictured below left)
On Monday morning my fourth consecutive day’s golf , this time in partnership with Mark Robson, we played the formidable partnership of Chris Bray and Bob Harris, where Chris putts left handed and plays right handed! The four of us thoroughly enjoyed our game, but I was on fire after such regular sunny golf, and played way ahead of my 18 handicap. A three and one win for Mark, who played well himself, and your Captain (pictured below right).
A fifty percent success record at this stage. Next up Graham Terry and Neil Anderson on 24th June.

Arthur Clarke Foursomes

This Saturday the annual Arthur Clarke Foursomes is being played. Players are to meet at 08:00 for breakfast rolls and coffee before the shotgun gets fired at 08:30. If you haven’t signed up yet please give this fun and speedy form of the game a go.

Roll ups

What better way to celebrate Father’s Day than rolling up either at 7.45am in the Club Cafe or at 12.45pm in the Bar, where names will be randomly set for golf, mixing in with those assembled .This is another opportunity for rounds to aggregate within the Order of Merit, where George Palmer leads the way.

On Saturday 23rd June I shall be leading our team into battle for The Whale Cup at Royal Mid Surrey, which is always a thoroughly enjoyable day.

On Saturday 30th June the Club Championships are being played. Those keen to play and with a handicap of 12 and under do sign up. The event is balloted to the top 36 players.

Captain’s Prize 7th July, 8.30am shotgun start

I am looking forward to seeing you all on 7th July when a four ball better ball competition will be supported with refreshments at the halfway hut, as well as prizes.
The event will be supporting my chosen charity, Parkinson’s UK, so as the Beatles sang, a splendid day is guaranteed for all.

Keep smiling and enjoying your golf on the bright side of the road.
