Men’s Golf Captain’s Blog

Men’s Vice-Captain (2022/23)

At the recent Captain and Past Captain’s Dinner, my Vice-Captain and next year’s Captain Simon Butler, announced that his Vice-Captain will be Peter McGovern. Simon’s choice of Peter was unanimously welcomed by the Past-Captains. I’m delighted that Peter will succeed Simon as Men’s Captain.

Peter is a member of the Men’s Golf Committee, a single-figure golfer, a lawyer and lives in Putney – and he used to play rugby for London Cornish. Simon will succeed me as Captain in October.

Men’s Daily Mail Foursomes

Members will be very pleased to hear that Rob Cutler and Nigel Reynolds (current holders of the Club’s Winter Foursomes knockout) have reached the fifth round of the Daily Mail Foursomes competition. Last week, they defeated a pair from Grims Dyke Golf Club, Pinner. Playing at home, Rob and Nigel won on their second extra hole. They don’t yet know their next opponents.

Surrey County Golf

More good news: our John Ling team (over 55s, 4BBB team competition), captained by Nigel Brown, is through to the fourth round after winning 5-0 away to Leatherhead. They will be hosting Cranleigh Golf and Country Club in the next round on Monday 4th July. Any Senior Members wishing to be considered for selection should update their availability via the matches section within IG or contact Nigel directly – nak.brown@btinternet.com

Congratulations to Alex Tonge for progressing to the knockout stage of the Surrey County Championship at West Byfleet Golf Club. He unfortunately was defeated in the first round of the round of last 16.  This form along with other strong results has earnt Alex a spot to represent the County in a first team match against Sussex at The Nevill Golf Club.

On Wednesday, past Captains Stuart Loggie and Nigel Candelot, played in the Surrey Seniors’ Championships at The Richmond Golf Club. Stuart finished eleventh with Nigel finishing 28th. Well done gentlemen.

Frankland Moore Mixed and Married Foursomes

After the success of Susan and Will Major in the Easter Monday Mixed Foursomes, another mother and son combination, Suzanne and Jack Collins, won the Frankland Moore Mixed trophy held last Friday.  They won with 44 points, with the Majors in second and Caroline Leslie and Michael Godfrey in third.  Astrid and Tim Drayson, having won the Syd Scott Mixed Foursomes last month, came fourth overall with 39 points but won the Frankland Moore Married trophy.  Graham and Jane Terry were runners-up in the Married division with 38 points. Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to everyone who entered; we had 24 pairs taking part.

Captain and Pro Challenge Series

Alas, my undefeated record in the Series came to an end when John Randel and Frank de Freitas won 2&1 against Ricky and I. The two of them dove-tailed splendidly. My next match is on 8th June.

Ping Mixed 4BBB

Congratulations to Danny Gesua and Astrid Drayson for winning this competition played last Wednesday, with a score of 41 points. They will represent the Club in the final later this year if they qualify to do so.   Both players are evidently in good form; Danny was in the winning John Ling team, whilst Astrid won the Frankland Moore Married Foursomes and the Syd Scott Foursomes.

Founders Cup Medal, 11th June

As the time of writing, there are still tee-times available.  Please sign-up via Intelligent Golf (IG).

Men’s Winter Foursomes

After various injuries caused a blip in the semi-finals being played to schedule, the finalists are now confirmed: Niels Verbeek and Ben Angood will be playing Miles Otway and Alex Fernandes.

Men’s Invitation Day

This took place on 28th May.  Blessed with great weather, it was a very good day won by Martin Horswood and his guest, James Fellows, a member of Dulwich and Sydenham.  Feedback from the guests – about the course, our staff and the lunch was very positive. On behalf of the Members who played, I would like to thank everyone at the Club who helped make the day run so well.

19 June– Club Roll-up
