Men’s Golf Captain’s Blog

While all eyes are on The Masters this weekend, closer to home on Saturday we welcome some of the country’s very best lady golfers competing in the 93rd Roehampton Ladies’ Open Gold Challenge Cup (our very own Nicole Stewart and Hyun-Ji Kim will be playing) so hopefully you can find time to see some great golf being played.

And on Sunday, we have the Men’s Section first ‘Major’ of the season with the Centenary Putter. We have more than 100 players entered. Good luck to everyone.

The course is in fine condition so a thank you from all of us to Peter Bradburn, David Howe, and their greenkeeping team for their collective efforts.  It was very pleasing to hear compliments last weekend from members of The Richmond Golf Club and the Surrey County Golf team. Surrey said that Roehampton Club was the best presented golf course they had seen this year and their captain also said our greens were the best that he had putted on in the last 12 months. Richmond were similarly fulsome in their praise.

Let’s ensure that we can maintain the quality of our course in the usual way – repairing pitchmarks, replacing divots and raking the bunkers.

PS. the Surrey County team beat the Club 9-3, whilst Richmond retained the “Horn” trophy 3.5-2.5 in what is always an enjoyable match and lunch to follow.

Surrey Golf

I’m very pleased to report that our Surrey 5’s A team defeated Walton Heath Artisans (at Walton Heath) in their first-round match 4-1 and are now drawn to play Coombe Wood in the next round. The victorious team was Neil Anderson, Rob Findlay, Graham Terry, Derek Mason, and Malcolm Turner.

Our Surrey 5’s B team are also through to the second round and will be playing Kingswood away on April 23rd. The team will be confirmed in the next few days.

Unfortunately, Richard Lurcott and Richard B Williams lost to Dulwich and Sydenham (away) in the first round of the 4BBB Kelso Hamilton knockout, by one hole. Our other Kelso Hamilton pair, Johnny Perkins and Malcolm Turner, are to play Reigate Hill in the second round.

The John Ling team (over 55s, 4BBB team competition) are playing Camberley Heath (away) on April 19th. The 10-man team will be captained by Nigel Brown for the first time.

ReGenerate Charity Golf Competition, May 21st

Tricia Morgan and I hope that as many members as possible will support this mixed competition. It will be similar in format to the charity competition we held before Christmas – a team event. Details will be shared soon.

Summer Golf Arrangements

These have now come into force. Please be assured that the Golf Committee, chaired by Niels Verbeek, carefully considered the options and various permutations open to the Club, including a return to pre-Covid arrangements – ie a return to a less regimented form of golf. However, the Golf Committee agreed that we still need to maintain the arrangements, with some slight variations. In short, we all have to compromise to balance the varying wishes of Members, and the large numbers of Members who play golf. The arrangements are not set in stone and will be reviewed over the coming weeks.

Men’s Stableford, March 26th

We had a full entry for this competition which saw Tony Durrant winning with 43 points (playing off 18), with Peter Stevens (21) in second with 40 points and Simon Lucas (22) in third with 39 points.

Summer Knockouts

These have now commenced, so please ensure that you play your matches by the set deadline. In the Men’s 4BBB and the Lockwood Foster, the first round matches must be played by May 1st
