Men’s Golf Captain’s Blog

The season of competition golf is now in full swing, with the first rounds of the various knockouts being played, inter-club matches being played and our teams playing in various Surrey competitions.

Firstly, many congratulations to David Worden for winning the Centenary Putter on 10th April; it was the Men’s section first ‘Major’ of the season. Playing off 16, David carded a net 65, Guy Ingham (20) was second with a net 68, and Will McEachern (13) in third, on countback with a net 69.

The next ‘Major’ is the Spring Meeting on 14/15th May; sign-up via IntelligentGolf opens on Saturday morning at 07:00. Please familiarise yourself with the booking regulations prior to signing up.

Surrey Golf

Last week, the John Ling team (over 55s, 4BBB team competition) defeated Camberley Heath 5-0, at their course.  The 10-man team, captained by Nigel Brown, are through to the third round where they will play either Windlesham or Leatherhead.  A great performance, especially as three matches were won on the 18th.

Unfortunately, our Surrey 5’s B team lost away to Kingswood last weekend but many thanks to the guys who played as well as those who played in the previous round against Cuddington.

Our A team, captained by Rob Findlay, will be playing away at Coombe Wood in their second-round match on 8th May, while our Scratch team will be playing Hampton Court this weekend in their second-round knockout match having defeated Windlesham (away) in round one.  Good luck to both teams.

Johnny Perkins and Malcolm Turner are still in the Kelso Hamilton 4BBB knockout; they will shortly play a pair from Reigate Hill in their second-round match.

Daily Mail Foursomes

Congratulations to Rob Cutler and Nigel Reynolds on winning against Strawberry Hill in their second-round match.  They won on the last, coming back from three down with five to play. They don’t yet know who their next opponents will be.

 Easter Monday Mixed Foursomes

Very well done to the mother and son combination, Susan and Will Major, for their superb win.  They won with 51 points(!), with Emma Angood and Niels Verbeek in second (41 points), and Marion Kreling and Simon Lucas in third (39 points).

Mixed Golf in May

There are further opportunities to play mixed golf in the next few weeks.  On Monday 2nd May, we have the Syd Scott Foursomes competition (please sign up via IG) and on 7th May, we have the annual Men vs Ladies match.  The Men’s team, now picked, will be led by Justin Thesiger.

We also have the Regenerate Charity Golf Day on 21st May:  sign up via IntelligentGolf is now open.  Tricia Morgan and I hope that we have a full entry for the competition as we did for the Christmas event; it’s a -team of four competition, shotgun start.  Individual entries are encouraged.  Entry fee is £15, with all proceeds going to Regenerate.

Men’s Invitation Day, 28th May

There are still places left for the Invitation Day; as I said in my last blog, with the course being in such good condition, I do hope that Members will support the day and invite their guests. It will be 18 holes (shotgun start) 4BBB, with a three-course lunch to follow and various prizes to win. Click here for the poster and more information

Summer Knockouts

With so many matches needing to played, in fairness to others and to ensure that the knockouts are run on schedule, I’m sorry that we can’t give extensions without a very good reason.  The Men’s Committee would prefer that matches are played rather than people winning by walk-over or a toss of a coin.  A few years ago, my foursomes match was decided on the practice putting green.  Members can view the progress of all the knockouts online via IntelligentGolf.

Club Roll-ups

On Saturday (30th April), we have a roll-up (open to Ladies as well) and additional rolls-ups have been added to the schedule over the next few months.  Please sign up via IG.

Captain and Pro Challenge Matches

Since my last blog, I’ve played two further matches. Playing with Will, we won against Nigel Brown and Andrew Linford 3&1, and last Sunday, Ricky and I won against Gerry Dennigan and Brian O’Boyle by 1 hole.  Gerry and Brian came back from 3 down but a par on the last by Ricky was enough to win (Ricky was on form with six birdies).  Needless to say, both matches were very enjoyable.

Please note that six additional dates (mainly through August) in the challenge series have been posted on the Noticeboard; if you would like to play, please sign-up.

The prestigious John Cross Bowl, an event for the top Amateur golfers in Surrey, was played on Friday 22nd April at Worplesdon Golf Club.

Please see the full leader board here: www.worplesdongc.co.uk/competition.php?compid=8856

Alex Tonge, Max Stanley and Pete Crocombe all represented Roehampton Club with all three players finishing in the top 20 – congratulations to Alex, Max and Pete!

Finally, many congratulations to P.B. Jacobse for having a Hole-in-One on the 7th hole last Sunday morning. I’m told that he struck a beautiful 4 hybrid.

Happy golfing everyone,

Paul Taylor, Men’s Golf Captain
