The Junior Golf Academy

Our Junior Golf Academy offers Junior Golfers aged 5 upwards a fantastic opportunity to start their golfing journey and learn the game. The academy forms a clear pathway to learn to play golf, make new friends and provides great opportunities to gain experience of golf, learn about rules and etiquette and assists in becoming junior members of the club. Our emphasis is playing more golf, recording more scores, and ultimately having more fun.

We have classes available Saturday and Sunday during the school terms with our PGA Professionals delivering a structured programme to ensure a fun and elementary introduction to golf while developing through technical instruction through games-based learning.

During the school holidays we run camps on a variety of days. These are fun days for all levels aimed at developing solid fundamentals, as well as covering topics such as chipping tips and tricks, how to hole every putt, playing on the course and mini competitions. For more information please contact our Professional Team and we would be delighted to help.

SafeGolf

In summer 2022, Roehampton Club was awarded the SafeGolf national golf accreditation for safeguarding.

The SafeGolf is a partnership of UK golf bodies committed to promoting a safe and positive environment for all those participating, working and volunteering in the sport of golf.

The SafeGolf partnership consists of members from the golfing bodies across Great Britain and Ireland and has been established to help golf respond to the issue of child protection in sport. Its mission is to safeguard the welfare of children and young people, as well as adults at risk, in the sport of golf.

SafeGolf is firstly, a website – www.safegolf.org – through which anyone with a concern about the welfare of a player, or the behaviour or practice of a coach, volunteer, organiser, parent or a player, can contact the lead safeguarding officer at their national governing body.

Secondly, it is the safeguarding standard England Golf will promote to all their affiliated clubs to ensure all clubs provide a safe and positive experience to children and young people whilst playing golf. The PGA are also using the standards to apply to all their PGA professional Coaches.

Junior Competitions

Junior Medals and Stablefords are held throughout the season both at weekends and during the School Holidays. These give Junior Members plenty of opportunity to begin playing in a competitive environment and lowering their handicap. Major competitions including the Junior Club Championships and the Junior Ryder Cup are held annually.

Adult members of the Roehampton Club also run flag competitions throughout the year. Flag competitions bridge a gap between coaching sessions and the main 18-hole Junior Stableford and Medal competitions. They are an ideal way for children to get involved in competitive golf for the first time, in a friendly, fun atmosphere.

The rules are simple: each player is allocated a certain number of shots (usually 36) before they start their round; when they have used up all their shots, they place a flag in the ground and the junior who gets the furthest around the course wins! Participants should have successfully completed the Junior Academy and put forward by a PGA Professional for Junior Membership should be able to choose their own clubs and shots.

Adult volunteers are asked to walk with each pair of golfers, to help them keep score and track their balls. No golfing experience is necessary, just the ability to count to ten and a good sense of humour!

Junior Weekend Golf Pass

Only juniors who have been awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold standard bag tags will be eligible to purchase a Junior Weekend Golf Pass. The Pass (2023 £176) is organised via the Membership Office – membership@roehamptonclub.co.uk

For more information on Junior Golf, email Ricky Pharo, at ricky.pharo@roehamptonclub.co.uk or speak to him in the Sports Shop.

We would encourage more juniors to get involved in competition golf. If this is of interest please contact Louis Laville – louis.laville@roehamptonclub.co.uk or Ricky Pharo – ricky.pharo@roehamptonclub.co.uk
