Notable figures from the Roehampton Club Centenary Book 2001 – Part 7 of 12

This is a continuation of the alphabetical list of the 450 individuals featured in the Centenary Book by Elizabeth Hennessy published in 2001 with a brief reference to their historic contribution to the Club.

Lyne Stephens, Charles – Original owner of the neighbouring Grove House Estate in Roehampton which is now part of the University of Roehampton.

Lyne Stephens, Stephen – Owner of the neighbouring Grove House Estate at the time of the purchase of 57 acres of land to Roehampton Club in 1902. 

Mackay FJ – Attended the original meeting in London in November 1901 at 12a George Street, Hanover Square to discuss the formation of a Polo Club in Roehampton.

Maclean, Mrs F – Ladies’ Golf Captain 1987

Major, Major Philip – Polo player at Roehampton Club in the mid 1930’s

Maples, Jim – Appointed Secretary of Roehampton Club in January 1954 succeeding David Haslam.

Marjoribanks, Sir George John – Part of the winning Buccaneers Polo team in the inaugural Roehampton Polo Trophy at Roehampton Club in 1902.

Marler, Dennis – Men’s Golf Captain in 1974. Non-Executive on the RCML Board at Roehampton Club in 1989

Marshall, Arthur – Local writer and broadcaster from the Call my Bluff TV programme in the 1960’s recalls his parents attending the tearoom at Roehampton Club during and after the First World War.

Marshall, Mrs K – Roehampton Club Ladies’ Open Golf Scratch Challenge Cup winner at Roehampton Club 1992

Martin, Eric Tyrell – Polo player at Roehampton Club in 1934

Marvin, Miss V – Roehampton Club Ladies’ Open Golf Scratch Challenge Cup Winner in 1976

Maskell, Dan – Radio and TV Commentator from the late 1940’s. Tennis doubles partner with Fred Poulson, former Roehampton Club ball boy and tennis professional at Roehampton Club in the 1960’s

Matthew, AG – Golf professional at Roehampton Club. Appointed in 1934. Featured in one of the BBC’s earliest outside broadcasts in 1934 giving a golf demonstration

McCall, HF – Men’s Tennis Captain, 1967-1968

McNair, Mrs WM – Roehampton Club Ladies’ Open Golf Scratch Challenge Cup Winner in 1926

Menzies, FC – Part of the winning Buccaneers Polo team in the inaugural Roehampton Trophy in 1902

Menzies, Mrs W – Ladies’ Golf Captain in 1965

Menzies DL, Lt Colonel – Men’s Tennis Captain 1952-1954. Men’s Golf Captain 1969. Chairman of the Club in 1971 succeeding General Birks. President of the Club 1985-1989

Merz,F – Men’s Golf Captain in 1991

Menzies, Jo – Daughter of Roehampton Club Member Sir Benjamin Morgan allowed to walk through the grounds on her way to school in the 1930’s

Mikhailovich, Russian Grand Duke Michael – Honorary Member of Roehampton Club in the early 1900’s

Middleton, Mrs JE – Ladies’ Tennis Captain, 1969-71

Miller, Charles – Founding Member of Roehampton Club in 1901. Also, a member of the Rugby Polo team with his brothers Edward and George and close friend Walter Jones.

Miller, Grace – Wife of Charles Miller, part of the Darley Family of Ireland with strong aristocratic connections including links with Edward VII and his entourage.

Miller, Peter – Son of Charles Miller. Officer in the Grenadier Guards. Scratch Golfer holding the Amateur course record of 71. Played for the Army. Won the Open Championship in Egypt. Caricature by HF Crowther Smith in 1926

Miller, James – Appointed Assistant General Manager of Roehampton Club in 1979 and General Manager in 1982.

Miller, Edward – Founding Member of Roehampton Club in 1901. Discovered Polo in India as a 21-year-old. Former Polo Manager at the Ranelagh Club in Barnes.

Miller, George – Founding Member of Roehampton Club in 1901. One of the original board directors of the newly formed Roehampton Club under the Chairmanship of Lord Shrewsbury.
