Bridge Blog

The Bridge Room refurbishment is now well underway and seems to be proceeding well. Being temporarily a peripatetic group has had its interesting side – especially playing in the marquee. We appreciate that it has been challenging for both the Tournament Directors and the Club’s administration in making the necessary arrangements for us – especially for moving furniture and equipment around. Overall though it seems to have gone well and we are very grateful for everyone who has helped to make this work.

Bridge Summer Party

The Bridge Summer Party was held on Thursday 6th June. The marquee worked well for the buffet dinner and it was convenient to have the drinks nearby considering that the weather did not allow us to use the garden.

Dinner was followed by a special session of Chicago Bridge in the newly redecorated function rooms. All in all, it was a very enjoyable occasion and thanks again to everyone involved in organising it.

Club matches and sessions

The busy match schedule in May produced a range of results. On 6th May, we beat Hurlingham by 28 imps to retain the Hurlingham Cup. A shaky start resulted in us being 12 imps down at half-time, but we rallied strongly in the second half.

The marquee proved to be a good venue and was generally well received by everyone, especially given the circumstances.

We also won our away match against the Queens Club on 7th May by 24 imps with our team enjoying their usual excellent hospitality.

Our home match on the following day against Royal Mid Surrey was less successful with Roehampton Club going down to a surprisingly large 40 imp loss.

RMS played some good Bridge against us and thoroughly deserved their win. We also lost our away match to RAC Woodcote Park on 29th May by a significant margin.

However, we bounced back in a very enjoyable away match against Oxford and Cambridge Club on 13th June registering a solid win at their impressive West End facilities.

Our teams tend to be partly selected with the strength of the opposition in mind so as to allow more players to have a chance to represent the Club.

Clearly, we will need to rebalance some of our teams next year to reflect the strength of the opposition we face, albeit that most of these matches are in any case ‘friendlies’.

External competitions

The team of Danny and Sally Gesua, Peter Hardyment and myself represented Roehampton Club in the Surrey Wanborough Cup Competition on Sunday 1st June. We had a good day finishing second in a strong field. We were a long way behind the fearsome Mayfield team, but we did however manage to beat teams representing our local leading Bridge Clubs – so all in all a very good result.

The Roehampton Club Ladies achieved a close win of 6 imps against Hurlingham Ladies in their Surrey Golf League match on May 1st.

Internal Club competitions

The Internal Croquet and Bridge competition is on Friday 13th June, with GC in the morning and Duplicate in the afternoon. Start time 10am, finish about 4.30pm. You need to play with the same partner in both, and each of you needs to enter on the Croquet Online Booking System. As usual, it will be organised by Ron Wood, so contact him if you have any queries.

Paul Tustain

It was very sad to learn about the recent death of Paul in a motorcycle accident in Spain. Paul played most of his Bridge at the Portland Club but joined our teams on a few occasions including for some successful campaigns in the Devonshire Cup.
