Bridge Blog

The Bridge Room refurbishment is now finally completed, and we were able to move back in on Monday 7th July. It has been very encouraging to hear the very positive feedback for our new look room. We really have a great facility in which to play bridge going forward. Many thanks to all involved in arranging this on our behalf and once again to the Tournament Directors and the Club Management for their considerable efforts in making the necessary arrangements for us while the renovation was underway.

Summer schedule

As the temperature ramps up, so our bridge activities temporarily wind down for the summer, which will give people involved a very well-deserved break.

James was able to run his final beginners class on Monday 7th July. It was in fact the first session to use the refurbished Bridge Room. James will run a new beginners class starting in September. We also plan to schedule some revision classes for recent students to recap lessons learned.

Niall will hold his last Monday evening session on 14th July and his last Friday session on 25th July, before having a bit of a summer break. However, he plans to continue with the Wednesday morning sessions over the summer. His other classes will then resume in September with dates to be posted in due course.

Loulou and Arnold will hold their last supervised play session of the season on Tuesday 22nd July after which they will also break until September.

The Tuesday evening supervised play sessions for less experienced players run by John Maskell is also now suspended over the summer with plans to restart in September.

Many thanks again to all the people involved in running these sessions and especially to the Club Members who voluntarily give up their time to support the bridge section.

Internal Club Competitions

As our external matches wind down slightly over the summer, it is good to see some of our mixed sport internal competitions taking place.

Eight pairs competed in the annual croquet and bridge competition organised by Ron Wood, in glorious sunshine on Friday 13th June.

The winners of the croquet (five 30-minute golf croquet matches) were Diana and Andrew Wilson. The bridge winners (14 hands duplicate, with all playing all) were Carmel Brancen and Jenny Gaskin.

Tim Russell and Ron Wood came second in both activities, making them the overall combined winners. All winners received a bottle of wine courtesy of the bridge section.

Preparations are well underway for the golf and bridge competition on 1st August.

Matches

On June 10th we played a match against the House of Lords which we won by a modest margin. Although technically a home match we agreed to travel to fit in with their requirements.

As well as a very upmarket high tea we were treated to a most enjoyable and informative tour of the premises by the Earl of Caithness.

On Monday 16th June we hosted the Triangular Cup competition between Hurlingham, RAC and ourselves. It is a fixture played each year between players involved in organizing the bridge activities in the three clubs.

Roehampton Club narrowly lost to RAC in a very relaxed and good-humoured contest. It was a good opportunity to learn more about recent developments in each club and explore opportunities for collaboration.

We hosted RAC Pall Mall for a friendly match on 24th July. RAC had a good win of around 40 imps on this occasion reflecting the depth of talent they have available.

Peter Hardyment and I represented Roehampton Club at the Surrey EBU AGM meeting on 6th July. We managed to win the special duplicate session that was run that day, on a very warm Sunday afternoon at Richmond BC.

I would like to wish everyone a very enjoyable summer. I will be on vacation in August but will hopefully have much more to write about come September.
