Bridge Blog

It is encouraging to see the good attendances and a nice buzz in the Bridge Room as we go into December. I think the 11 teams we had on a recent Friday could well be a record number and some of our other sessions have been pretty full.

Christmas Party

We had a good turnout of 85 people on Saturday 6th December for our Annual Bridge Christmas party. After being well lubricated with cocktails and dinner we had a slightly raucous 12 days of Christmas ably led by Bob Harris.

The ‘spot the baby’ quiz proved to be slightly more challenging, with some inspired guess work being needed and certainly harder than Belinda’s ‘and you haven’t changed a bit’ would have us believe.

Thanks to the Kitchen Team for an excellent dinner and to Ron for managing our special Chicago session which was great fun. A super party and many thanks again to Belinda for her excellent organisation.

Club competitions

On Monday 10th November we ran the Handicap Challenge Trophy event. Many congratulations to Jeannie Little and Rikki Marks for an outstanding winning score. Also, to runners up Peter Bonnor-Moris and Marion Tamblyn who finished just ahead of Peter Combe and Tim Russell.

Matches

The Roehampton Club team had a very good win of over 100 imps in their match against Royal Wimbledon on 25th November. Congratulations to everyone playing on such a good performance. By coincidence, our team playing in the golf and bridge league played Royal Wimbledon very soon after on 3rd December and also managed a solid win of 30 imps.

Club sessions

It was very good to hear that the dinner plus ‘play with a mentor’ session on Thursday 11th December went really well and was much appreciated. 41 people came for supper in the Polo Room, having a nice combination of pasta, garlic bread and salad followed by a selection of little cakes.  There were 64 people who played bridge which was ably directed by Gitte and supported by Peter Bonnor-Moris. Everyone seems to have enjoyed the evening and many asked that it becomes a regular event. Suggestions to run this more frequently are being considered.

It was very encouraging to see that the initial relaxed duplicate session run by Niall in place of one of his regular practice sessions on Friday 7th December was also very well attended and went very well. The next session of this kind will be on Friday 9th January.

Dates for the diary

The Calendar for 2025-26 is now out and available from the bridge noticeboards as well as being posted on Bridgewebs. As previously mentioned, there are several new events to look forward to next year, in addition to the normal matches and competitions, which are mainly arising from the 125th anniversary celebrations.

On Thursday 18th December we will have the Social Duplicate Christmas party evening. There is a sign up for this and further details are available on the noticeboard. Many thanks to Ron for agreeing to run this again.

On Wednesday 24th December starting at 11am we will have the Christmas Eve social session with mince pies and mulled wine and very relaxed bridge. No sign up is needed for this.

Please do come and join us for these events and others in the calendar.

Due to Christmas and New Year, we will not have our normal evening duplicate sessions on:
Wednesday 24th December
Thursday 25th December
Wednesday 31st December
Thursday 1st January 2026

The Tuesday afternoon supervised bridge sessions managed by Arnold and Loulou will run up to and including Tuesday 16th December and will restart on Tuesday 6th January.

The Tuesday evening beginners practice bridge sessions will also run up to and including Tuesday 16th December and will restart on Tuesday 6th January.

Outside events

The ninth Annual Hurlingham Swiss Teams Invitational Event takes place on Saturday 24th January 2026 from 10am to approximately 4.30pm. Each team must be made up exclusively of Club Members. Welcome tea and coffee, lunch and afternoon tea, coffee and cake will be served. Entry details are available on the bridge noticeboard.

Wishing everyone a most enjoyable festive season with plenty of good bridge alongside other sources of Christmas cheer.
