Classes

Our bridge teaching activities have substantially wound down over the summer months with classes on hold, although Niall continues to run his Wednesday morning sessions over the summer.

We have of course been continuing with our duplicate sessions and the Friday Teams event (albeit as a monthly session).

Internal Club Competitions

The golf and bridge competition on 1st August went well accompanied by some good weather.

Congratulations to the winners Viv Harris, Marion Tamblyn, Alan Lever and George Trevor and the runners up Jane Peel, Caroline Williams, Angie Atkins and Sue Grant.

Matches

Ron Wood kindly organised our annual croquet and bridge friendly against Hurlingham on 25th July. It was a very amicable match with Hurlingham winning the croquet and Roehampton Club the bridge, so an honourable draw overall.

Apparently one of the Hurlingham players, Nick Boote, brought with him the wooden mallet that his grandmother had used 99 years ago when becoming the first woman to win the All-England AC Handicap Championship, played on our lawns, where she beat Roehampton’s Lt Col Rollo by +20 in the final, much to his annoyance.

I would like to wish everyone a very enjoyable summer. At times it feels almost like being in Kuwait where we ended up playing a lot of bridge over the summer as it was too hot to do anything else!
