Bridge Blog

Dear All,

I am pleased to announce that the postponed Summer Drinks party will go ahead on September 2nd at 6pm.

Tickets are £15 for member and £20 for guests.

Tickets will be on sale at Reception from Monday 9th August. I do hope that many of you will be able to join us for a very welcome reunion.

We are also planning to hold a Chicago session in the Bridge Room at 7.30pm, after the Drinks Party. If you would like to play in this, please sign up at Reception, when purchasing your tickets for the Summer Drinks. There is no charge for the Bridge, but I need to have some idea of numbers in order to set the room up appropriately.

Our prestigious Swiss Teams competition will be held on Sunday 24th October, subject to no changes in current Government guidelines.

There will be an allocation for twelve Roehampton Club Teams (all team members must also be Club Members) at a cost of £140 per table.  £35 each.

We shall have up to thirty tables in the Bridge room and Garden room – fewer than before.
The price includes an afternoon and evening of bridge, afternoon tea refreshments and a three-course dinner.

The tables will go on a first-come, first-served basis.  In order to reserve your table please email Belinda Stone (belindadweck@gmail.com) with your team name, your team captain and the three other team members.

Congratulations to the Diamonds Team in the  London Business House League. I incorrectly reported that even though they had won their group in a new Handicap Summer league only the two highest scoring Teams would compete in a Final. In fact, 8 teams went through to quarter finals. Our team of Ralph, Peter BM, Peter H and Malcolm had a very convincing 37 imps victory over Buttons B and will now play Balliol in the semis. Good luck.

We had a successful win over RAC by 95 IMPs on 22nd July.

This was our first in person match to be played since March 2020 and a good time was had by all.

Congratulations to Ron Wood and Val Lanceley, Nigel and Celia Johnson, Roger and Marie Perry, Sue Norgate and Verena Higgs

Congratulations also to Danny and Sally Gesua, Jo Eskdale and Roger Perry, Linda Major and  Andrew Guest, Wendy and  Roger Gilbert who played in a Tennis / Bridge match  vs Hurlingham Club on 27th July.

The normal arrangement of tennis followed by bridge after lunch had to be rearranged a few days before the day due to the predicted heavy rain. Of course, needless to say, after all the reorganisation that went on, the rain never arrived, and the match could have gone ahead with the tennis played outside in the morning.

Roehampton Club won the bridge part and Hurlingham the tennis which resulted in a narrow win for Hurlingham overall on points.

Paul Mendelson’s lessons will start again the w/c 20th September. He is planning for them to be online initially, with an option to move into the Bridge Room, should the COVID-19 situation stay stable.

For the moment then the online planned schedule is:

Tuesday 2pm = Duplicate Extra

14-16 hands of duplicate on RealBridge, with some set hands, followed by hand-by-hand analysis on Zoom

Wednesday 10.30am = Intermediate Class

Pre-lesson bidding quiz, specific topics of study, including Negative Doubles and other advanced uses of Double, followed by declarer plays examples.

Thursday 10.15am = Advanced Class

Specific bidding topics, featuring Cue-bidding, competitive tools, duplicate thoughts

Friday 10am = Friday Morning with Paul

90 minutes of supervised play with 4 set deals on RealBridge, followed by analysis and the bidding quiz on Zoom

Occasional Specials

All online classes: £7 per session
If live in bridge room: £13 per session

Tim Chanter is also going to run a Bidding Refresher Course on Tuesday evenings online starting 14th September. It will be a 12-week course and will cover the essential building blocks of bidding both in uncontested and competitive auctions.

It is suitable for either those who have taken beginner lessons and wish to brush up on their bidding skills, or those who have played in the past and are feeling rusty and in need of a ‘back-to-basics’ refresher.

Please note that this course will not be appropriate for those entirely new to the game.  Following each lesson there will be play, followed up by written and video commentary on the boards for attendees to review at their leisure afterwards. The course will cost £144. Please sign up at Reception if you would like to attend.

And finally, a date for your diary: 18th October at 5pm the Bridge AGM.

Two of our Committee members are retiring from the Bridge Committee this year and if anyone is interested in standing for the Committee please contact me for more information on kate11blake@btinternet.com
