Bridge Blog

Dear All,

I am delighted to offer you a date for your diary!

If, as promised in the roadmap to freedom, we will be able to have unlimited numbers outside from 21st June we plan to hold a version of our Summer Party on Thursday 1st July. This may only be an outside drinks party, but at least it will be a chance for us all to get together again. Obviously, if progress out of lockdown is speedier than anticipated then this may morph into our full Summer Party with not only drinks, but dinner and Bridge! We can but hope …

Congratulations to Jenny Giles, Jackie Herring, Gordon and Sandra Fox, Danny Gesua, Peter Hardyment, Ron Wood and Ralph Evers for a 15 imp win against Hurlingham Club on Thursday 25th February. This was played on Real Bridge and Ellen Lyons, the Hurlingham organiser, commented that ‘Everyone played in a most sportsmanlike way, which made it all great fun’.

The Royal Wimbledon Golf Club Ladies League has been played online this year. We have played five matches against Royal Mid Surrey, Royal Wimbledon, St Georges Hill, Sunningdale and Burhill Golf Clubs. We had three good victories, one loss and one draw. I haven’t got the results yet of the final positions but well played to Viv Harris, Sally Gesua, Marion Tamblyn, Loulou van Geuns, Claire Martin, Gunilla Huldt, Sandra Fox, Joan Cookson and Kate Blake.

The current Teams League is due to finish on 19th March. As there is only one week before a natural break on Good Friday, we are proposing to start the next League on 9th April. As this is after the first relaxation of the lockdown and golf, tennis and swimming will be open at the Club, this League will run on Fridays again but with a later start time of 4.30pm. Obviously, teams will still be able to arrange a time mutually convenient to them both, but the default start will be 4.30pm. Hopefully the slightly later time will encourage more of you to enter a team. Would all those who would like to enter a team let Danny know as soon as possible please. Danny’s email is: dannygesua2003@yahoo.co.uk

As this means that there is a ‘spare’ Friday we are going to run a Teams Competition on Real Bridge on Friday 26th March at 1.30pm. This will be along the lines of the Friday afternoon teams that Nigel used to run for us. If you would like to enter a team please email me details of your team please at kate11blake@btinternet.com.

We’ve just received this information on a match vs All England Lawn Tennis Club –
To be played on BBO on Thursday 8th April 4.30pm
4 pairs required (experienced).
If interested please contact Julie (julie@juliebacon.plus.com) by closing date 18th March.

I have also been sent details of another Charity Bridge event. This one is at 2pm Friday 19th March in support of Wimbledon and Putney Commons and will be played on Real Bridge. The organisers say that there are ‘A selection of fantastic raffle prizes on offer, along with the usual selection of champagne, wine, meals on the town, and bridge orientated prizes, we have a guided walk on the Common with a Conservator, a tour of the Ranger’s stables and who is going to turn down a couple of bags of manure lovingly produced by the Ranger’s horses; Ted, Scrumpy, Hector and Montana?’ Please see the information at the end of the Blog for more details.

I do hope that you are all well and managing to enjoy the spring weather. It really does feel that we are nearing the beginning of the end …
