Bridge Blog

Our live Bridge Duplicate and Chicago sessions are running on:

Monday Duplicate: 1.30pm
Thursday Chicago: 1pm
Thursday Social Duplicate: 7.30pm

We are also going to restart our monthly Teams again on the third Friday of every month. This will be live in the Bridge Room.

The first competition will be on 15th October at 1.30pm.

Please sign up as a Team on the signup sheet which is on the noticeboard in Reception. Or, if you are not going to the Club very regularly then please email me your team to kate11blake@btinternet.com and I will sign you up.

Please note that to play in the Bridge Room all players must be double vaccinated or show me proof of a negative lateral flow test taken within 12 hours of the session.

We are continuing to run one online Duplicate session a week. This is currently at 2.30pm on BBO on Wednesdays. However, numbers are extremely low for this.

The Rubber Winter knockout competition is back. If you would like to enter then please sign up at the desk at Reception. Closing date for entries is 6th November. The draw will be made shortly after that date.

Our prestigious Swiss Teams competition will be held on Sunday 24th October, subject to no changes in current Government guidelines.

There is an allocation for 12 Roehampton Club Teams (all team members must also be club members) at a cost of £140 per table.  £35 each.

The price includes an afternoon and evening of bridge, afternoon tea refreshments and a three-course dinner.

All players will be double vaccinated or have shown proof of a negative lateral flow test that morning and the tables in the Bridge Room will be well spaced.

If you would like to play then please email Belinda Stone (belindadweck@gmail.com) with your team name, your team captain and the three other team members.

Many thanks to Ron for organising and running our annual Bridge and Croquet match against Hurlingham. Ron reports:

‘Our match went well, with an outright win for Roehampton Club!  In the morning we played four rounds of Golf Croquet level doubles, with Roehampton Club winning by 11-5 matches.

In the afternoon we played a 16 board Teams of Four bridge match, which Roehampton won by +58 imps.

Our team was:

  1.   Ron Wood (7) and Nigel Aspinall (?)
    2.    Tony Salem (0) and Gill Salem (12)
    3.    Allen Lever (9) and Adrienne Sackin (5)

There are three matches coming up in November. If you would like to be considered for the Team, please sign up on the noticeboard in Reception or email Julie on julie@juliebacon.plus.com.

It is with immense sadness that I have to tell you that Albert Isalan passed away peacefully at home on Friday 17th September 2021 at the age of 95, surrounded by his family.

Albert, a Member of the Club for 19 years, was a passionate bridge player who spent many happy hours at the Club. He was a true gentleman and such a good Bridge player, a skill that didn’t seem to diminish with age. He will be greatly missed.

His son Mark has kindly written the following:

‘Albert was a Member of the Club for many years and loved playing bridge there. Bridge was his passion since his university days in Istanbul, and he won too many trophies to count, both in Turkey and in the UK, over a playing career that lasted more than 70 years. His last triumph was winning the Roehampton Club Miller Cup in January 2020 – the oldest person ever to do so. He is survived by his wife Monica, son Mark and two grandchildren’.

Our sincere condolences go to the Isalan family.

A reminder that Paul’s online lessons are now fully underway. The schedule is:

Duplicate Special on Tuesdays at 2pm
Intermediate on Wednesdays at 10.30am
Advanced on Thursdays at 10.15am
Friday mornings on Fridays at 9.45am

If you haven’t tried them, they are well worth a go – very informative and very entertaining. If you need any more information, then please email Paul on pm@aceoftrumps.com

Please remember the Bridge AGM on 18th October at 5pm. I hope that many of you will be able to come.

I do hope that many of you will visit the Bridge Room soon.
