Hurrah – the weather forecast for Thursday is set to be good and I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the party which starts off in Roehampton Club’s lovely gardens with a glass of Pimm’s in hand!

Surrey County Ladies Tennis Clubs Bridge League

I am pleased to report that the Roehampton Club Team of Kate Blake, Caroline Jenkins, Val Lanceley, Sue Norgate and Belinda Stone (NPC) retained the trophy this year in the Surrey County Ladies Tennis Clubs Bridge League, having previously won this in 2022.

This was an excellent achievement, particularly as according to Belinda they weren’t meant to …

‘Many years ago, darling Ron Wood said to Val Lanceley and Jo Eskdale – ‘Now you two are playing more formal bridge perhaps you would like to find two other players and enter a team for the Surrey Tennis Bridge Teams League’. For a few seconds both Val and Jo felt sheer joy at being asked by Ron thinking ‘Gosh, we really are improving and on the up’.   Only to be brought crashing down to earth by his next words ‘It is becoming embarrassing as our regular team keep winning the trophy and we need to field a less able team’.

‘In recent years the regular team has been Kate Blake, Caroline Jenkins, Val Lanceley and Sue Norgate. For the last two years I have been organising the matches, and playing in the occasional match when one of our regular four could not make an agreed date. Also, Marion Tamblyn kindly stepped in on one occasion too. The league this year consisted of eight tennis clubs within Surrey’.

Congratulations to all the team for retaining the trophy and good luck for next year too – I’m sure you can make it a hat trick!

If anyone reading this report would like to enter a second Roehampton Club team to this league, please get in touch with Belinda Stone (belindadweck@gmail.com), who is happy to give you more details and put you in touch with the organiser. She reports that some of the other clubs have more than one team entered and that it is a very gentle and friendly league.

Other leagues Roehampton Club take part in:

London Business Houses Contract Bridge Association (LBHCBA) – Diamond Team Convenor – Malcom Bricknell and Hearts Team Convenor – Rita Gallinari-Jones
Surrey County Ladies Golf Bridge League – Convenor – Kate Blake
Surrey County Ladies Tennis Clubs Bridge League – Convenor – Belinda Stone
Surrey Palace Bridge league – Convenor – Fiona Pollard

If anyone is interested in putting a team together and joining any of these leagues or would like more details, then please get in touch either with myself or the convenor and we will give you further information and put you in touch with the organiser.

Match vs Oxford and Cambridge – 16th May

This was a new fixture in our calendar and the team reported that it was a fabulous venue with charming opposition.

Obviously not charming enough though as they defeated Roehampton Club by 8 imps!

Ellie advised that this was due to a slam being bid by the opposition at both tables. Bad luck to the following Roehampton Club Team – it was clearly a very close match. Peter and Henryka Bonnor-Moris, Sandra Fox, Ron Wood, Sally Gesua, Ellie Elliott, Angela Elliot and Leopold Hirsch.

Next Team Practice Friday 16th June

Please do sign up on the Bridge Board in Reception, as it helps with the organisation to know how many teams are attending.
