Bridge Blog

Thank goodness for online Bridge in the midst of our second lockdown.

We now have four regular Duplicate sessions:

  • Monday, 1.30pm
  • Tuesday, 6pm
  • Wednesday, 1.30pm
  • Thursday, 1.30pm

If you haven’t yet played in any of the sessions and would now like to join please email me at  kate11blake@btinternet.com and I will let you know how to get started.

As you have surely all guessed, our Christmas Dinner and Chicago Bridge has been cancelled. I am proposing to run a festive session on Real Bridge on 15th December. I do hope that many of you will join us for a very social game of Duplicate Bridge.

We will play one Board rounds so that everyone can get to see and chat to as many people as possible. Please come dressed with a Christmas Hat and have a large glass of something to toast all your fellow Club Members as you play.

Congratulations to Malcolm, Diane Bricknell, Peter Hardyment and Rob Warriner for winning the latest Teams League. Congratulations also to Julie Bacon, Maria Wiehe, Gordon and Sandra Fox for being the runners up.

The new Teams League gets underway on Friday 13th. We have 11 teams signed up so we are going to play it as two Round Robin Leagues so that we can finish before Christmas.

If you are still not sure about playing in a Teams Event then please do come along to Paul’s seminar on Teams of Four Tactics which is on Friday 27th November at 2pm

Paul ran a great class on Teams of Four tactics last week and the next one on November 27th will revise and build on the knowledge accrued during that first session.

Hopefully you will be inspired to enter a team in the next League which will start in the new Year.

The League provides an excellent way to gain confidence in playing Teams and hopefully will mean that many more of you will sign up for matches in the future.

The Royal Wimbledon Golf Club Ladies Bridge League has restarted. Roehampton Club played their first match online against Sunningdale Golf Club and had a very good win by 44 imps. Well done to Viv Harris, Sally Gesua, Marion Tamblyn, Loulou van Geuns, Claire Martin, Gunilla Huldt, Sandra Fox and Kate Blake.

The Diamonds Team played their first London Business House match on Thursday against ICL and, unfortunately, lost by 8 imps. Much turned on 2 boards where marginal slams were bid on only one table, the opponents making their slam on one of the boards, while The Diamonds went down in their slam on the other board. Well played to Peter H, Malcolm, Peter B-M and Ralph. Good luck with your remaining fixtures.

The Hearts Team had a good win in their second match against KPMG. Well done to Verena Higgs, Adam Parker, Rita Gallineri and Loulou van Geuns.

Congratulations to Peter Hardyment and Malcolm Bricknell. They played in the English Bridge Union Swiss pairs on 30th October.

Despite many famous internationals playing, they were leading after five hours going into the last session. Unfortunately one mistake cost them outright victory, but still they ended up third.

And finally, thank you to all those who played in the SIMS on Monday 9th November in aid of Children In Need. Here is the link for donations in case you have mislaid it. https://www.ecatsbridge.com/sims/cin/general/donations.asp  Contributions are voluntary but as you are aware all charities are struggling at the moment and your donations would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Kate Blake | Bridge Chair
