Sarah Adlam

With great sadness I share the news that Member Sarah Adlam passed away early on the morning of 16th April. She was readmitted to the ICU at the Marsden recently with a deep lung infection and her body was not strong enough to fight it.

She had COVID right at the start of the pandemic and spent six weeks on a ventilator. That, in combination with an existing lung infection, severely weakened her and left her very vulnerable.

I had known Sarah for many years, and she was one of the few people in my circle of friends who had played backgammon longer than I have. She was an ever-present member of the London backgammon scene for half a century.

In her youth she became so good at the game that her parents stopped her pocket money and told her she had to earn it from backgammon which she duly did. She was a member of the RAC for many years before moving to Roehampton a few years ago.

Sarah played for us in the London League, considerably strengthening our team. She is the first, and I hope the last, Club Champion to pass away while holding the title.

She was ever cheerful, even in her recent adversity, and we will all miss her.
