Annual Art Exhibition in November

I am sure artists are making progress with their entries for this year’s art exhibition. An online entry form will be available with instructions from early September.

The good news is that the Reception Team (Rahma, Jimmy or Isabelle) will help you complete the online form if you ask. There will be printed copies under the noticeboard in Reception and in the Art Studio.

Completion of the entry form will be by 30th October. Drop off framed artwork on the 8th November. The maximum size for framed artwork is 80cm Wide and 60cm high.

Art Studio

The soundproofing of the art studio is complete and we are looking forward to less sound of squash if not the sound of silence.

The next stage is fitting out the easel storage cupboard (more shelves and less low brackets) and a deep clean. So open studio will have to wait.

Art classes

Booking is now open for autumn term art classes which run for ten weeks in the Art Studio starting Monday 21st September and finish on Friday 4th December.

Reading Room Exhibition

I learnt the art of porcelain painting when living in São Paulo Brazil 1972. Next posting to Kenya and unable to find a kiln, I found a watercolour class to try a new hobby, run by artist Geraldine Robarts.

Back in the UK porcelain painting and watercolours were put away as other commitments took over. When a secondhand kiln was offered to me, 20 or so years having first learnt the craft, I unpacked my porcelain paints and attended specialist courses learning different techniques.

Being a Roehampton Club Member for 44 years, I took the amazing opportunities the club offers for watercolour classes, first with Claire Wyatt then Charles Penny and latterly with Shaun Carey, all have been a challenge but very enjoyable. Lessons were a huge help through Covid. A couple of great terms with Kathy Barker gave me a taste of acrylics.

The porcelain painting is however the art / craft I love the best. All items painted can be put to good use, given as presents or hung on a wall!

Sue Norgate

I have enjoyed painting in watercolour for some years now. I have had lessons in the past with Charles Penny and Shaun Carey which have been fun and instructive. The short courses have been very welcome with lots of ideas and inspiration.

Painting from nature – landscapes to flowers and shells has always been a favourite of mine. It’s not always possible but it is rewarding to paint outside to try and capture natural light and colour.

Not having done much drawing or painting since A level it has been wonderful to start again in retirement. It’s perfect for both concentrating the mind and relaxing!
