Senior Men’s Golf Chair’s Report

AGM

I attended the AGM last weekend. It was an interesting and enjoyable occasion. We had good presentations on the Indoor Golf Centre from Simon Baker and the course from David Howe. There were two excellent speeches from our past Captain, Bob Mitchell and our new Captain, Johnny Perkins. I was pleased that our section received a favourable plug.

Grail

The Grail held on 30th September was played in reasonable conditions despite a stronger than normal breeze. The course remains in superb condition (en passant much praised by our guests from other clubs). There were a number of scores on or better than handicap. There was a clear winner. Nicolas De Wasseige with 39 points an early starter hence no picture – sorry. Chris Cowan was second with 38 points closely followed by Andrew Pedley with 37 points (countback) and Nicholas Brown with 37 points.

Other results

On 23rd September the Waltz was won convincingly by Giles Clark, Hassan Dajani and Nigel Karmel with 82 points. Some way behind in second place were Nicholas Brown, John Fooks and Evert-Johan Schenk with 76 points.

On 7th October for only the second time this year we had a very wet morning so wet in fact that we decided that we would only compete on the front 9. There were some good scores amongst the six groups who turned up. The winners had 5 gross 3s on their card and had a nett score of 29. They were Brian Hall, Ken Pratt and John Cardwell.

We have one men’s senior match to play and two mixed matches. I hope that next year we can recruit more men to make themselves available for the mixed matches. They are most enjoyable. Our record overall has been successful – full details to follow with the papers for the AGM.

Forthcoming events

I hope that many of you will attend the AGM after the October Grail on 28th October. The Grail will be a shotgun event and the usual means of ordering a lunch will be organised. I hope and expect papers will be circulated in good time. Don’t forget the annual golf dinner on 27th November. It is usually an excellent event, Gary Wolstenhome is the speaker. It would perhaps be nice to have a seniors’ table or two. We are also fast approaching our Christmas event – lunch after 9 holes of golf on 16th December. We can celebrate drinking the wine purchased from competition funds saved up during the year.
