Projects update

The Function Rooms are now open for Member use to complement the Members’ Bar.

Once again, we have received many favourable comments from the functions held there for Members and guests culminating in a well-attended and hotly contested Curry and Quiz on Wednesday and the Evening with Henry Patten last night where over 100 people attended to listen to how he won his Wimbledon and Australian crowns and to see the wonderful Wimbledon Men’s Doubles Trophy close up.

Work has now begun on refurbishing the Bridge Room and completing the Garden Room Bar which will service the Bridge and Garden Rooms. This work is due to be completed at the beginning of July. That leaves the Bar Terrace extension to be completed in early August. When all the snagging has been finished and Members have used the three areas as designed, we will review the scheme to see if any tweaks are needed.

Indoor Golf Centre (IGC)

Six potential contractors are due to submit their tenders by 20th June, and we anticipate a report from the Contract Administrator the following week so we can give an update at the AGM on 30th June.

We will then be in a position to survey the membership with a consultation document on how the facility will be operated, costs of building it and how the whole golf operation will be improved by making the Short Game Practice Area, IGC and Golf Shop its central focus.

Padel and Pickleball

The Working Group has decided on the priorities for the Club to approach the Council with a pre-application meeting and these have been ratified by the Tennis Committee. We will be looking to convert courts 4-6 to five padel courts with a cover and then relocate the three clay courts with floodlights to courts 26-28 which are currently grass. We could even squeeze in three clay courts and four pickleball courts in that area. We will also look to trial the taping up of pickleball courts more regularly on court 1 in the ITC during the winter months to ascertain the demand for this emerging sport. The Outdoor Pool sunbathing area will be extended and a new play area for children aged 6 to 12 will be installed to complete the family provision in that area. This proposal will be drawn up and shown to the Council for comment before we submit a formal planning application.

Congratulations!

Tennis

Congratulations to our Women’s First Team on winning the NPL Doubles’ title recently at St George’s Hill LTC – the trophy is in the new trophy cabinet at the top of the Clubhouse stairs. Our Men’s Team also performed really well but just lost a tight final to Stoke Poges LTC.

Squash

We are delighted that Satomi Watanabe – who has reached her highest-ever World Ranking of #7 – has been voted by PSA Pro Players as co-winner of the ‘Spirit of Squash’ award for 24/25 season.

Professional squash player Satomi Watanabe recently finished her three-year course at Roehampton University, receiving a 2:1 in Sports and Exercise Science.

While in the UK Satomi combined studies with squash, training and playing on the PSA tour. Alongside her studies, Satomi was supported by Roehampton Club, receiving coaching from Tiago Goriely and competing in our teams, including winning the Women’s European Club Championships three years in a row.
