Chief Executive’s Message

Dear Member,

Although it seems to be quiet around the Club being holiday season, there is so much sport going on all around us, and Club Members are playing active roles.

Joe Salisbury was narrowly defeated in the Olympic Games Men’s Doubles with Andy Murray for GB in Tokyo last week and has returned to play for the Club in the National Doubles Indoor Finals at St George’s Hill this week before returning to the United States to play and prepare for the US Open.

Annabell Fuller was narrowly beaten over extra holes in the semi-final at the English Amateur Championship at Moortown GC last week. She won the Strokeplay qualifying event, and her handicap has now moved to plus 6.3. Another first for a Roehampton Club golfer. Annabell is playing for England in the Home Internationals this week at Woodhall Spa.

Croquet star and Club first teamer Mark van Loon won his second Ranelagh Cup in three years last weekend here winning all his matches before the rains came. Click here for a full report.

Pickleball is the latest sport offering form the Club to test your racquet skills. Padel tennis is very popular on our new courts and pickleball already has 100 Members playing – the next family fun session is planned for 28th August on Court 11. Come and try this fun and easy to play sport with European Champion Louis Laville

Foxhall Keene is a name to conjure with. Not one of most recent Members with superb sporting talent as he joined in 1902 but Archivist Steve Riedlinger has delved into the Club archives to unearth details of a man of considerable talent who was a Member for 40 years. Click here for details.

Another man of considerable talent was of course Russell Evans our former President. We have received many compliments on our full obituary/ tribute to him published last week.  Click here if you missed it. An announcement of his passing was made in The Times and Daily Telegraph today. We believe these newspapers will publish a full obituary in the coming weeks.

Club Events to look out for:

Alas Blackhurst and Frei on 9th September- our very own irascible two members will be discussing topics of the day – vaccinations, Cummings vs Johnson, Biden vs Trump, Olympics, freedom of the press, the perils of social media and of course effects of Brexit in the UK and Europe amongst others. Book your tickets now.

Autumn term Art Group classes start from 20th September and are now open to book. Click here to view their video and for class details. Book quickly as the classes are always very popular.

Craft Beer Tasting – 25th August
Lastly come and sample a selection of five tasty beers from your local microbrewery. The Park Brewery make flavour-packed small-batch beers in Kingston upon Thames. Each of their beers pays tribute to Richmond Park, located a short walk from the brewery and taproom. An in-house beer expert from the brewery will be taking Members on a guided tasting session of their core range and seasonal selection. Learn all about craft beers, this microbrewery and get ready to listen to intriguing stories about nearby Richmond Park. Click here for more information and booking details.

Best wishes,
Marc
