Senior Men’s Golf Blog

My last report included the results of the April Grail, held on 14th April and won by David Moss with the very credible post-lockdown total of 41 points. Because of Covid restrictions, David was presented with the miniature cup the day after the event and photographed in solitary state. Sadly, he was unable to take it home.

Like many other Members of the Club, the seniors have enjoyed getting back onto the course and I have seen many of our number playing. Despite its heavy use, the course is looking good and playing well. Even after course maintenance on 21st and 22nd April, the greens were true and receptive.

Most seniors are still getting to grips with the new handicap system. I was surprised that having scored respectable 35 points in the Grail, my handicap went up! However, we have to place our confidence in the accuracy of intelligent golf, which will eliminate the vagaries of calculations of ‘senior brains’.

Our next competition will be the Spring Medal which is scheduled for Wednesday 12th May – sign up from first thing on 28th April. It remains to be seen whether the wet weather forecast for later this week will make the rough even more difficult than usual. As it is a Medal, entrants are advised to take a provisional if they risk not finding their initial shot!

We are also starting our schedule of matches against other Clubs. Our first fixture is away at Combe Wood on 10th May. To be selected to play in matches, seniors must join the senior squad and then indicate their availability to play on the given dates. This can be done through intelligent golf. Home matches will start at the beginning of July, restrictions permitting. As a result of the age limit for seniors’ golf being aligned with Surrey golf at 55, we now have a larger pool of eligible players and I hope we can give as many people as possible the chance to play for the Club in the Seniors team this season.

Again because of Covid restrictions, our usual summer knockouts have been combined and replaced in a four-ball, better-ball competition. Sign up will be closed on Sunday 2nd May and should be done via Intelligent Golf. Please sign up without delay!
