Ukraine / Rest of the World v Ireland, March 12th

The Rest of the World vs Ireland mixed 4BBB match takes place on Saturday 12th March.  Given the desperate situation in Ukraine, I ask players of both teams to wear something blue and yellow.

We have 28 Members playing; I will captain the ROW team, with my predecessor as Men’s Captain, Gerry Dennigan, leading the Irish team. We have shuffled players somewhat to balance the teams (we had more ROW players than Irish). The matches tee-off from 11am through to 12noon.

The presentations will be concluded before the England vs Ireland Six Nations fixture, which kicks off at 4.45pm.

Ukraine / Regenerate fundraising

Over the last few days, Regenerate’s Chief Executive Andy Smith has travelled to the Romania/Ukraine border to support the charity ‘Dare 2 Dream’ in Romania. ‘Dare 2 Dream’ is taking food, clothes and medicine to an organisation on the border in the town of Siret.  There is a just-giving page for donations: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/heartukraine

Surrey 5’s golf competition (1st round opponents)

We have two teams entered for the Surrey 5’s and the first-round matches are now scheduled:

  • March 20th – home match v Cuddington (8.30am tee-time)
  • March 26th – away match vs Walton Heath Artisans (11.30am tee-time)

Team captains – Simon Butler (for the Walton Heath game) and Peter McGovern (for Cuddington) – will be selecting the teams.  A number of you have already signed up via IG but if you haven’t and would like to play, please go to IG to indicate your availability and also email Simon simonbutler87@gmail.com and Peter peter.mcgovern.64@icloud.com to let them know. You can only play in one of the matches.

Each 5-man team consists of two players with a handicap index of between 5.1 and 11.4 and three players with a handicap index between 11.5 and 18.0.  We need a pool of players to draw from, in anticipation of us winning these first-round matches.

Captain and Pro 4BBB Challenge Matches

I’m very pleased (and relieved) to report that Ricky and I have, after two halved matches, managed to win our first challenge match last Sunday 6th March.  Once again, we had another very close and enjoyable match – never more than 1 hole in it, winning on the 18th against Simon Butler (my Vice-Captain) and Niels Verbeek, Golf Committee chair.

The next challenge match for Ricky and I is against Justin Thesiger and Bob Mitchell on 13th March. As a reminder (once again!), these challenge matches are raising money for Regenerate, my chosen charity for my year of captaincy.

Club Roll-up

Congratulations to Paul Farrell for winning last weekend’s roll-up; playing off 24, Paul won with 36 points, with Simon Prince (12) second with 35 points and Jonny Perkins (15) in third with 34 points. We had 15 entries.

We have a busy few weeks of competition golf ahead, in particular the first rounds of our summer knockouts, so the next Club roll-up isn’t until 30th April.

Surrey Golf Competitions

In the Kelso Hamilton (4BBB knockout), our two pairs have been drawn to play against Reigate Hill and Dulwich and Sydenham.  In the John Ling (over 55s 4BBB team knockout), we have been drawn against Camberley Heath; Nigel Brown is leading the John Ling team this year.

Men’s Golf Committee

The next Committee meeting is scheduled for 15th March with the Golf Committee meeting the following week on 22nd March.  If there are any matters that I should be aware of, please let me know via paul@taylorkeogh.com.

Summer Knockouts

The draws have now or will very soon be made for the various knockouts.  Please note the rules of entry, most importantly playing your matches by the set deadline date.  Simon Butler and Bob Mitchell, on behalf of the Men’s Section, are the knockout organisers.

Breaking news

Yesterday, in the glorious afternoon sun, Scott Stanley produced a scintillating round of golf while playing a friendly game. He knocked it round in 62 blows! His round included three eagles.

The Scratch team are in action on Sunday away at Sunningdale Heath, as well as a playing at home against the Oxford Divots.

Happy golfing everyone …
