Men’s Golf Captain’s Blog

The Annual Golf Dinner, always a highlight, was held last week and did not disappoint.  John Inverdale, the former BBC sports presenter, was great – lots of stories told and answering a range of questions from the audience.  He spoke about being pointed out by Tiger Woods when commentating in a whisper at St Andrews, gave his views on South African rugby and spoke about his best and worst TV interviews. He could have spoken far longer.

More than 85 Members, including a very welcome representation of Senior Members and one new Member – Nick Yates – who joined the golf section within the last couple of weeks, attended.  Welcome Nick! As well as listening to Mr Inverdale, it was an opportunity to acknowledge the winners of the past year’s major competitions – Men’s and Seniors.

Luke Gorman was the winner on the night, winning a hatful!  It was most certainly a great year for Luke.

Also, I must congratulate Andy Nowell and Craig de Silva for winning the 2021 Summer 4BBB, following their recent loss in the final of the 2020 Summer 4BBB.  Commiserations to Ben Walmsley and Adam Musikant, in what I’m told was another closely contested match.

The Annual Golf Dinner raised over £1,000 for Gerry’s charity of the year – Prostate Cancer UK. On behalf of Gerry, many thanks for your contributions.

Gerry and I, and I’m sure everyone, wish to thank Tristan and Louis for pulling everything together and to Nikki and her F&B team on the night for their excellent service – some of the team were working at the Club for the first time – and of course the dinner itself.  Appreciate it’s a long time away, next year’s dinner will be held on 18th November.

Since my last blog, we have had held two competitions:

Men’s Stableford – Kenneth Ukoko won with 41, beating Graham Terry on countback, with Jonathan Perkins in third place with 39 points.  We had 59 entries.A

Club Roll-Up (mixed) – Adam Musikant won with 41 points, with Rasmus Best in second place with 39 points and Justin Thesiger in third with 38 points.  The next Roll-Up is on Saturday (27th November 27th; please sign-up via IG please.

Between now and Christmas, we also have these following card competitions:

Men’s Stableford: 4th December (entry via IG is open)

Club Roll-Up (mixed): 12th December

Christmas Charity Competition: 18th December – As I mentioned in my previous blog, it’s a mixed team competition and the money raised on the day will go to Regenerate – www.regenerateuk.co.uk/  – the chosen charity of mine and Tricia Morgan, the Ladies’ Captain.  Sign-up via IG opens on 4th December.

On Sunday morning to coincide with St Andrew’s Day, a Scotland team, captained by Campbell MacDougall, will play a Rest of the World team captained by me. We have seven 4ball matches.  I’m sorry we couldn’t include everyone but there are other friendly matches scheduled for next year and I’m keen to see more Members play in them.  Please keep an eye on IG and the Men’s Golf Noticeboard.

The first round of the Winter Foursomes has now been completed. Congratulations to everyone who are through to the second round (I’m afraid that I won’t be one of them as Bob Mitchell and I lost to Tony and Johnny Durrant 3&2 – a strong combination!).  All second-round matches must be played by 19th December.

The Men’s Golf Committee meets next week (30th November) so if there are any golfing issues that you want to air, please contact me via paul@taylorkeogh.com or one of the committee members – their details are listed on IG.

Happy golfing everyone …

Paul Taylor, Men’s Golf Captain
