Club competitions

I’m delighted to kick-off my latest missive with news of a Hole-in-One, in the most recent Club Roll-up.  Miles Otway made it on the 13th, hitting an 8-iron beyond the hole, spinning his ball back into the cup.  It was Miles’s second hole-in-one on the 13th (made last year).

While Miles has been a Member of the Club for ten years (and was a previously a Member as a child), he took up golf properly just a couple of years ago.  He’s currently playing off 17 so I expect Miles will be lower in no time.

The winner of the Club Roll-Up was Justin Thesiger (off 10) with 39 (continuing his good form this year – he won the 4 Club earlier this month), with Will De Quant (8) in second with 39 points (lost on countback).  Jonathan Perkins (15) was third with 37 points, nudging Martin Horswood (6) into fourth, also on 37.  A special mention to young Harriet Prince for her fifth spot.

We have a Men’s Stableford competition on Saturday (29th January. We have a full entry but if you would like to play, you will be on the Reserve List and will be contacted in the event of any last-minute withdrawals.

Surrey 5’s golf competition

After a two-year absence, because of the pandemic, Surrey Golf will be running inter-club competitions this year.  We will be entering two teams for the Surrey 5’s – an individual match play competition, open to full seven-day Members. Each five-man team consists of two players with a handicap index between 5.0 and 12.0 and three players with a handicap index between 13.0 and 18.0.

Simon Butler, Vice-Captain, will lead one of our teams, and Peter McGovern (Men’s Golf Committee) is leading the other.  If you would like to be considered for selection, please sign-up via IG, no later than 10th February.  We would very much like to see Members, who’ve not played in many if any Club matches, to sign-up.

To sign up, please login to IntelligentGolf and click ‘Competitions’ – ‘Matches’ – ‘View All Squads’ and join ‘Surrey 5’s 2022’. You can also go straight to the match squads by clicking this link

This year, the Club will also be entering the John Ling Knockout (over 55s 4BBB team event – we are holders of the Plate – Nigel Brown is the new captain), the Surrey Scratch League (captained by Vince Thorne) and the Kelso Hamilton Trophy (two pairs 4BBB knockout – handicap indexes 13 and 18.0, matches to be played midweek or weekends).  I will be selecting the Kelso pairings.

Also, last year’s winners of the Winter Foursomes – Nigel Reynolds and Rob Cutler – will represent the Club in the Daily Mail Foursomes.   The winners of this year’s Winter Foursomes (now at the quarter-final stage) will have the honour of entering next year’s Daily Mail if they so wish.

Captain and Pro 4BBB Challenge Matches

The first of this year’s series of challenge matches takes place on February 6th; Ricky Pharo and I will be taking on Richard Lurcott and Colum Murray.  The matches will be raising money for Regenerate, my chosen charity for my year of captaincy.  While there’s now only one match date free, rest assured I will be adding some further dates over the summer, so please keep an eye on the noticeboard.

Course Maintenance

Last week, I walked the course with Peter Bradburn, the Club’s Course and Grounds Manager and David Howe, who was recently appointed our Head Greenkeeper.  I wanted to learn more about their priorities for the course and the challenges they face – the main one being the changing rainfall patterns and the impact it’s having on the drainage of the course.  As we all know, there are certain holes that do suffer more than most. Peter and David explained how they and their greenkeeping team are working hard to protect the course over the winter so that it’s in good order for the spring and summer and they explained some of the work they plan to carry out over the coming months, not least to improve the drainage on the course.

While Peter shares information about the course in the Recorder, I’ve asked Peter and David to post regular bulletins on the noticeboards (all being well, the work on the 10th tee will be completed by April).

Needless to say, and something which has been said many times before over many years, we all have a duty of care for the course so please repair pitch marks (not just your own), replace divots and rake the bunkers – and please avoid crossing the roped-off areas.

Golf Dates in February

After this weekend’s Stableford, we have these competitions next month:
