Ladies’ Golf Report

I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year holiday and are raring to go at the commencement of the year.

At last the course is open, I can’t remember it being shut for so long in the 18 years I have been a member, nor can I remember such rain.  Let us hope we have a summer to compensate.

Annabell Fuller, England Women’s number-one ranked player on WAGR, played with Trish Boyington in Florida before Christmas and shot 74 playing off the white tees on a course of 6,200 yards! To put it in perspective, Roehampton Club for the ladies is 5,515 yards. Annabell has graduated high school at IMG and started life at the University of Florida this year. We wish her all the best. Rumour has it both Annabel and Sammy may give a clinic this summer so watch this space.

Tuesday saw the first event of 2020 and it was lovely to see so many of you. A wonderful turnout of 48 golfers. The weather and seeing all your chums were a draw and I had a lovely round but did not end in the winning circle which went to:

Mel Louis, Sarah Dring, Pippa Walker and Shirley Keane with 40 points

Second: sorry about this grouping but as someone said; ‘cream rises to the top’ … Jo Thesiger, Lorna Robey, Jane Peel and Sue Lennox with 38 points

Third: Caroline Dewar, Lydia Charles, Avis Darzins and Cathy Stoddart with 37 points on count back.

Clearly all our handicaps are going to be reduced by the end of the year after the Psychology Talk from Jamie Burrows. If we all come away with at least two positives we should improve by a minimum of 1% I think he said, so I am looking forward to great results. This leads me neatly onto …

Pearson

All the matches bar one have been played, Roehampton Club’s last match is against Wentworth at home  in February.  The team are in a very strong position having won the last match of 2019 against Tandridge at home 6/1.  Extremely well done to Liz Collins, Fiona, Bridget, Emma, Therese, Caroline Dewar and Henrietta for playing in pretty grim conditions with the course closing behind them.  Thus far, the Pearson team have two away wins of 5/2 one loss 4/3 and two home wins 6/1  Very best of luck for the last game.

Derry

The next match is against Hankley Common at home on 12th January.  Good luck to Jo, Lorna and Jane.

Future events

The Captain’s bridge afternoon is on Tuesday 3rd March.  Please allow those playing bridge to sign up in the early times. The format will be foursomes so that you can arrange your bridge fours.  The sign up opens at the beginning of February and you will have to sign up and pay for the bridge at reception.

There is a comprehensive diary on the website and a monthly information sheet on the board regarding events to look out for.  If anyone has any trouble accessing this or indeed downloading a copy of the diary on their mobile phones (either Android or iPhone) please let the Committee know.

Please sign up for friendly matches both home and away on Intelligent Golf and put your contact details on the Club directory. If you do not know how to do this, please contact the Committee.

A plea from the wonderful librarians Linda Hamilton and Mary Barlow that books left for the library should be in a condition you would like to read yourself. Thank you to everyone who contributes both books and by reading them.

Please, please, can we have some sunny Tuesdays!
