Chief Executive’s Message

Dear Member,

Russell Evans MC

A number of very fitting tributes were made at the funeral and the reception afterwards at the Club yesterday to celebrate the life of Russell Evans. His two sons Mark, Neil and daughter Penny all reminisced on how wonderful a father and husband he was plus how much loved the Club and was so pleased on how it had developed since he oversaw the member buyout in 1989.

Longstanding Member Michael Orr spoke of Russell’s calm leadership at a crucial time for the Club and Chairman Alan Jenkins commented how inspiring Russell had been for his predecessors and for Board Directors over the last 30 years.

Alan also announced that the Board of Directors had decided that as Russell had been elected President for life the office of President should remain with him in memoriam, in his honour. He also announced that the Tennis Committee had approved that the Men’s Doubles Club Championship Trophy be renamed the Russell Evans Trophy. His children have been invited to present it to the winners at the Club Championships each year.

A Welsh Men’s Choir was on hand to give a lovely background to the celebration singing Russell’s favourite hymns and tunes.

Padel Tennis Championship Finals

The inaugural padel tennis championships have been very popular and the finals this Saturday (10am to 3pm) are bound to be highly contested. Please come and watch this exciting fast-growing sport as Members of all ages compete to win the Club’s trophies.

National Team Tennis Championships- Bournemouth 10-12 September

Our Men’s and Ladies’ First Teams are competing at West Hants TC with the men looking to defend their national title. The women have qualified for the first time in a number of years so both teams want to do well. The Tennis Channel is live streaming the event so you can watch how both teams get on – click here for details

Joe Salisbury and Annabell Fuller

Our top two sports stars are in the news again – Joe is competing in the US Open Men’s Doubles as 4th seed and Annabell scored 3 points out of 5 as GB&I unfortunately lost to the US in the Curtis Cup in a tight match at Conwy GC last weekend. She then came back to the Club to compete in the Frankland Moore Mixed Foursomes on Monday to wind down before flying back to Florida University this week.

Grass Tennis Courts

Lastly this week I urge you to grab a game on our grass courts before they close to undergo their annual maintenance to ensure they are in the best condition to open next May. Chris, Simon, Russell and Kevin have worked hard all year, despite the awful wet weather, to give you the best grass surfaces they can. Many Members have commented how superb they are this year. Courts 19-14 will close w/c 13th September and Courts 25-28 will close the following week. With the second half of September forecasting to be wet yet again, make the most of every dry day up to then. The only upside of the consistent inclement weather is the golf course has looked green and well defined all summer!

Best wishes,

Marc Newey, Chief Executive –
