Art Palette – Richard Ramsay, Art Group Chairman

These are extraordinary times and everyone’s health and wellbeing is of course paramount. I hope that you are all safe and well.

I became Chairman of the Art Group when Sian retired at the end of March and would like to thank her, on behalf of the Art Group, for the tremendous work she did as Chair.

This involved standing up in front of us at the formal occasions, chairing the art committees, hanging the exhibition, taking water colour classes and buying shortbread. She also undertook an enormous amount of work behind the scenes which went unseen and was extremely valuable. She has left the Art Group in great shape, following the best exhibition ever. We will find an opportunity to thank her in person when the Club opens.

I would also like to thank her for preparing me to become Chairman and for assembling a tremendous team of enthusiastic and knowledgeable people on the art committee. They are all volunteers, Members, giving up their time, contributing to the success of the Art Group within the Club and I am really looking forward to working alongside everyone.

I have been a Member of Roehampton Club for over twenty years; mostly playing tennis and some golf. After an achilles operation I joined the beginners’ art classes 18 months ago before moving onto acrylics. I have not looked back!

Looking forward, the closure of the Club is temporary. The Board will monitor the government advice closely and we will resume when permitted.

The Art Lectures have been postponed and not cancelled. They will resume as soon as it is safe to do so.

The Art Classes have set up WhatsApp groups for the acrylics, beginners, life drawing and water colour classes. Sian is posting a painting from the art class exhibition each day and students are posting their latest work for everyone to enjoy. We are amazingly adroit and supportive of one another’s work! It is good to stay in contact.

We will be launching online summer term art classes

We plan to set up all the summer term classes online, with Kathy and Charles as tutors. This will allow students to see and talk to each other and the tutors, see demonstrations, show their work and enjoy the usual conversations, support and advice. These will use zoom video conferencing which is so easy to use. One click to download zoom and enter your details; one click on emailed invitations to enter each class. An email to all Art Group Members with details will be coming out shortly.

In the meantime, if you are interested in joining an online class, email letting us know which one. We have had interest from Club Members, who are not currently members of the Art Group, and who would like to join an art class for the first time. We could set up a new beginner’s class so you can progress together.

Let us hope the restrictions on our ability to meet at the Club are over in time for us to hold our autumn programme and thank Sian in person. In the meantime, stay safe, well and socially interactive online!
